Hello, It is a sad day that I decided I need to sell my volvo 740.
I bought this car at the start of the year to replace my T5 due to needing to do a lot more commuting and the insurance on the T5 was somehow more expensive that the prior year! in particular i picked this one due to the overall reliability and running costs.
I never really planned on selling it so put quite a bit of money and effort into it, she is a very tidy car, which only a few very minor bits needing sorting out. first, she has 80k original miles on the clock, this can be proven with DVLA mot history check as well as past history/paperwork that comes with the car, it's clear that the prior owner took really good care of this car as shown with the handwritten service information in the manual.
I wanted a very reliable and cheap to run car, and this has been perfect, its surprising how well she does on petrol, i didn't work it out, but i often go to put petrol in to find she only needs £10 or so.
mechanically excellent, absolutely everything on the car works, except the fuel gauge, its very common for these to fail, and i was going to get a bit of electrical contact cleaner and see if i could get it working, but i never got around to trying it. it does move about erratically, or sometimes not at all. all other gauges etc are working perfectly. even both headlight wipers are working perfectly. Also within the last month she has had a new water pump just because it was very slightly leaking water. now 100% perfect, leaks no water or oil at all. regarding the fuel guage, i generally just filled the tank up and reset the trip meter, then you get a rough idea of how many miles you have left, ive never been stranded at all and i am always surprised when i go to fill her up how little petrol has been used!
she recently had a new exhaust, all 4 tyres are in good shape. I also had all 4 wheels balanced when i got the car as there was a nasty wobble, this fixed it 100% tested up to 100mph and she is rock solid now, no wobble at all.
The engine is the famous volvo "redblock" "B200E" its a 2.0L 4cylinder 8v with petrol injection, so as you can tell its probably one of the very best in terms of true old volvo reliability and economy. She also has a true 5 speed manual gearbox (opposed to the common 4sp + OD which is quite common for cars of this age) i believe it's known as an M47 but I'm not sure. I know it's cleaché but i genuinley would jump in this car and drive anywhere in the world.
as for optional extras this is the GL spec, which isn't the base model, but there isn't a lot in terms of luxury. which is actually another reason that drew me to the car (less things to break and fix!) however this is a very easy classic car to live with in daily life, it has all the things that you want, including central locking, front/rear window demisters, front electric windows, etc all working perfectly. also has front electric seats but to be honest ive never tested these. it has 4 original volvo chrome wheel trims in really nice condition, these are getting quite rare and i really like how they look, as well as a brand new original spare wheel + tyre.
I have also fitted an aftermarket JVC head unit which is really nice quality, it has everything you want including a rear AUX cable that is routed into the glovebox. it has one on the front too, but i didnt use that one as it was a bit in the way when changing gears. it has everything you need, cd player etc. Also 4 very new speakers in the door cards, (2 standard) and its surprising how good the sound quality is, the 2 in the rear door cards were just purchased new within the last few months (JVC) but the front door speakers also look very new (cant be more than 4-5 years old) and still sound very good. and a new rubber aerial which works very well.
The body is in very good condition, the only bit of rust is on the nearside rear door tip, (looks like someone opened the door into something that has scratched it) then left to rust, it is 100% surface rust and quite un-noticeable, however it would be a very easy fix as its only on the surface and small, apart from that that body in incredibly tidy, and really does shine when cleaned. even the engine bay metal is all very very tidy, there are marks around the car, its not at all factory new, and this i believe is original paint, but still looks great, with really no noticable marks. the fuel flap does need a new hinge (i still have the fuel door itself) but the plastic hinge is broken, of course i will include the fuel door with the car for the new owner!
but at least i did fit a new locking fuel cap with 2 keys.
As for the interior this is probably the worst part of the car, its by no means in a bad state, but some of the plastics are missing or cracked, namely the roof lining is missing (very common as they drop down after many years - so i just removed it)
as well as front door card pockets (they where all smashed and cracked - i prefer to not look at all the smashed up plastic and they still look quite tidy without them in my oppinion, and lastly a pillar plastics (they broke when removing the roof lining)
as for the fabric itsel its in good condition, with only very minor marks, the driver's seat has no bolster wear which really helps prove the genuine mileage too.
I'm being quite critical on the interior, its not bad at all, and its still very presentable and tidy. if you could find the last few bits that it needs it would be a very very tidy old thing!
There is quite a lot of paperwork, as well as 2 original keys.
I think I have covered everything, but if you want some extra information just get in touch.
I tried to get a good variety of pictures and such, but if theres anything you want, just let me know and i can easily grab a picture.
Also if i've missed anything you can call or text me on 07982 147 327. the car is available at any time for viewing in tamworth, b77
I'm looking for £850 ono but i might be persuaded if you can come up with a quick sale.
