Unfortunately I lost my garage, job, and storage last week, so I need to sell all my project cars. Most have gone, this is the last of them -
I bought this car for myself, I had grand plans to restore it but unfortunately I have lost my job and storage so it has to go. My loss could be your gain. I chose this particular car for a few reasons. First, it's an XJ Series 2 which are getting rare now, second, it's a Daimler Double Six VDP which makes it even rarer, and third, because it's not a complete rusty shed.
I've given the car a good clean so I could see what I was working with, and although it looks OK it will at some point need a complete re-spray. The paint has micro blistered quite badly on the bonnet and rear wing tops, and the paint suffers from dent's, scratches and chips on most panels. However it does shine well as it is, and could be left as is for a while. It's a nice colour too, Marello Cherry Metallic. Only the Daimler VDP cars were painted in Metallic colours and had the painted heater vent on the front.
The bodywork is surprisingly straight, the headlamp peaks, front wings, windscreen surrounds are all good. As you can see from the pictures the arches are not bad and no signs of filler. All 4 doors are OK, some localised bubbling but definitely savable. The sills, toeboards, heelboard and radius arm mounts all seem good, some surface rust and flaking underseal but nothing to worry about. It would need 2 rear tank covers and a rear valance. The boot floor is solid as a rock though.
Chromework is OK, the rear bumper has a dent but the middle section is removable so can be changed easily, front over-rider peaks have some surface rust as usual. All 4 tyres would need replacing.
I started the car up today, it ran fine but really needs a service! Oil pressure is good. It's the Pre-HE V12 so flat heads and good for power. This is the engine to have. The brakes work fine although they're binding a bit. Handbrake works OK, they're never great. I took the car for a little drive up my private road earlier, front shock bushes need replacing and rack bushes are vague but these are common XJ problems. Everything else seems tight and fine.
Interior wise the seats are good and have no rips, there are no carpets. Headlining has sagged as always happens. The wood dash is lovely, VDP's had better quality wood and it shows.
I don't really know what else to say. I have maybe made it sound worse than it is, I just want no surprises for the next owner. It's a very rare car that deserves to be restored and will make a very rewarding project. It'll turn heads and be worth good money when it's done.
