It has had an engine swap which has all been declared properly so if you check on the government site it comes up as a 2495cc - sorry, will edit to add that to the OP. Not 100% sure what engine was put in, have left him a message to get an upate so I'll update when I can.

Be worth more if it was complete. Series 2A Lightweights command good money even if projects as long as complete.
Had it been I would have been very interestd.
good luck with the sale

Judging by that radio mast base on the OSF wing its a 24V FFR (fitted for radio), with one of those massive double belt powered alternators.
I think it is worth more than the asking price tbh, more like £3k. Wish it was mine..

I couldn't speak for the alternator I'm afraid, I do know it was ex-military so I do believe the radio aerial was functional at one time. I also remember him having an enormous aerial fitted as I can vividly remember it swaying violently around in high wind while descending an alarmingly steep hill, not sure if he still has that aerial or not. Best I can say is give him a ring for some more info if you're interested and he may take an offer it's certainly a lovely machine and I'm aware the ad doesn't do it justice - I just don't know enough to expand on it. Edit: found an old picture of it from 2006ish with the aerial still fitted (and fishing floats threaded on it for some odd reason) - imgur.com/0wH4F3A

I really like this but I don't know a thing about series Land Rovers!
Can anyone that does chip in and shed some light on what's happened to this? Does it need any kind of inspection with the body modifications? Or is losing the doors and back end considered cosmetic?

Separate chassis so you can do what you like within reason, this looks to have had stuff added (cage, mounts for the "bed") as opposed to taken away for the most part, although it has had the back end chopped short & a new non standard rear crossmember which is toeing iffy ground- compared to a lot of modified Land Rovers though the structural mods appear pretty minimal, and I wouldn't worry about it myself.
No idea on the legality of the (lack of) doors, but it's not a vehicle identity (i.e. SVA) type issue. They just lift off on Lightweights anyway if I remember rightly, but that was to get the weight down for helicopter transportation, where PC Plod's view is probably not particularly relevant...
The front end is standardish 2a Lightweight, with the exception of the arch extensions. The bulkhead (two piece on a Lightweight as standard- they are quite different to a standard one)has been extended upwards which is why the roofline is weird.
Bit of a shame really, as mgmal says original (ish) 2a Lightweights are pretty rare beasties now and command good prices, but this would need a lot of work to get back to that. It's probably not far off the money as it is but will need someone who wants a toy instead of a classic Land Rover to take a shine to it- difficult thing to judge really as a one- off.
