I've been looking ("window shopping" ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png) ) for pics of tinted windows recently and am surprised that I couldn't find a thread on here to satisfy my curiosity The main reasons I'm looking into this (geddit?) is to hide the junk in the back of the car (dark or mirrored sound good), and hopefully smarten it up at the same time. Requests :Does anyone have any experience about mirror tint versus dark tint? or pics? (I've had dark & coloured before, never tried mirrored but am curious ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ) Any suggestions where to buy (Ebay is an option - any others, or recommended Ebay suppliers?) Some pics to start things off... Greens ? Smart, but too light for me. ![http://blog.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/01/1960DodgePolara_02_700.jpg](http://blog.hemmings.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/01/1960DodgePolara_02_700.jpg) ![http://www.twilighttint.co.uk/gallery/photos/Classic%20Vintage%20vehicles/scimitar%20gte%20prior%20having%20tinted%20windows.jpg](http://www.twilighttint.co.uk/gallery/photos/Classic%20Vintage%20vehicles/scimitar%20gte%20prior%20having%20tinted%20windows.jpg) Brown (could be classy on the right car but it's not what I'm after) ![http://www.jeuaccess.com/images/fl-8/brown-window-tint-design-inspiration-2.jpg](http://www.jeuaccess.com/images/fl-8/brown-window-tint-design-inspiration-2.jpg) Yellow smoke? I've got dark tint on the rear window of my defender to hide what's in the back. Just used a roll of cheap tint from a local market. The window is just flat and it was a ball ache to get right, if you're doing anything more complex I would suggest getting it done professionally.

Forgot to say it's on a Retro so flat (or near-flat) glass, no complex curves. I've tinted worse shapes in the past. Just the rear side /door glass, not the tailgate or front windows.

If I were you I'd be looking at a dark bottle green if you could get it for the Hunter or a dark grey smoke. If you do go for a mirror tint you want an opaque one rather than a solid one, otherwise it will end up looking pretty cheap. If you're just doing it for privacy and you're not worried about the aesthetics then a bright chrome mirror tint is best, if you wanted to help the aesthetics you'd have to chrome the door pillars to match ideally. Tints always seem to look best when they turn the side glass into a uniform sheet unless you're using brighter colours in which case you can more easily get away with visible breaks in the line. ![](http://www.coloredfilms.com/images/Auto%20Tint%20-%20Lime%20Green.jpg) ![](http://www.sadkids.com/images/oakland_caprice_72dpi.jpg) This is a good example of a coloured mirror tint working on a car of the same type of colour. If it offends, remember I'm using this to illustrate a point. ![](http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g299/DARTSFILMZ/pink7.jpg) Green Lantern theme yes. ![](http://www.window-tint.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/green-window-tint.jpg)

What car is it ? I have tinted lots of retro's, mk2 cortinas one Lotus cortina, vauxhall cresta PC, just in the process of tinting all 9 windows on a mk2 Granada estate while its in for paint, classic mini's and so on, most of the side windows on early classics are flat, place a flat edge rule on the surface of the glass and you will see if it's flat or not,
Some key rules to tinting
Clean clean and clean again
Clean environment
Clean hands
Clean windows
Clean interior
Clean rubbers
Light
Heat gun ( adjustable )
Lint free cloths
Glass cleaner
Small craft knife with snap off blade
Warning on above blades, cheap blades cut into glass and blunt very quickly !
I use olfa Japanese blades with olfa silver knife
If you can remove the windows all the better but if you can't you will suck up all the dirt and dust from around the edges and then proceed to pull all your hair out,
Talcum powder for casting the curved windows
Garden pump sprayer for the mounting solution ( don't laugh )
Mounting solution ( use cheap washing up liquid the cheapest one is best as it doesn't have hand conditioners etc in it )
I use Tint Slime from America
Masking tape
Squeegee for expressing the mounting solution out from under the film
Film for tinting, you get what you pay for, you buy cheap and you will probably never want to try tinting again,
And patience lot's of it, if you have all of the above then you may proceed, to start tinting but don't be surprised if you can't cope with the stress it will put you through,
If you want it to look good and last ie not fade after a year or be scratched to hell then get someone who knows what they are doing to do it, after buying all of the above and the stress it will put you through I am sure it will work out cheaper to have it done by a professional,
Tint shade, if you need for people not to see inside then the darker would be best, say around 15% to 5%
Please don't take this as me being rude, I am only trying to advise,

Wow. Thanks for the info / ideas / tips, things have moved on a lot since I tinted stuff in the past ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) rusty - thanks for the pointers. I've done a few cars / vans over the years but a checklist from someone who has experience is always welcome. It's for the 70s Hunter estate in my sig, the "boot" sidewindows are flat, rear doors are flat (or very slight single-curve), no curved glass to fight with. Mr vulgalour - bottle green is something I hadn't considered but now you mention it ... have found a local'ish place that have mirrored green that should suit very nicely (their 10% below is very tempting), "Green lantern" ish? www.tintfit.com/shop/mirrored-films/mirrored-films-green/mirrored-films-green-10 ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Thanks for listing some alternatives (pink Fiesta ??) but that's not really the type of look I'm aiming for ![O_o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/browraise.png) The lime green on the Yank is interesting but too see-through for me. Top contender so far : ![http://www.tintfit.com/image/cache/data/Mirrored%20Films/Green%20Finish%20/Mirror%20Green%2010-500x500.JPG](http://www.tintfit.com/image/cache/data/Mirrored%20Films/Green%20Finish%20/Mirror%20Green%2010-500x500.JPG) No decision made yet but hoping to get it done in the next few weeks

If i can get the glass out i will, i totaly hate doing it in the vehical! I cut the fil roughly 5mm from the edge of the glass and seal it with clear or black nail varnish, it stops the edges lifting when the rubber goes back on ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) As said clean it lots, i go over it with a new razor blade before the final clean, sometimes there are deposits sunk into the glass that washing wont remove ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png)

Window tinting is a black art, real skill involved to get it flat and stay flat. Give it to the pros as you're likely to balls it up and have it laying in a scrumpled heap in the corner of the garage after hours of unsuccessful attempts.

I have an orange tint in the rear 3 windows of my baja: ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh19/simonmace/IMG_637175098564608.jpg) I found a place local to me that does both car windows & shop glass (the orange is intended for display windows etc). I took them the glass in loose, the side windows (flat) were obviously no problem, but they were not sure about doing the rear glass as the "shop" type film is not as stretchy as "car" type film. All turned out ok though, no peeling or bubbling at all.

Only car I have had with tints (Circa 2004): ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/JoeM/Old%20205/09100003np.jpg) Was still legal to have front tints when this was done - but not as dark as I had lol Nearly side swiped a black car changing lanes in the dark, so can see why they made them illegal

I have just been looking at getting my V70 done, founds pics on local tint Co's websites to give me an idea of what different shades will look like on that sized car, I have tinted cars myself before but for the sake of £170 I will pay a pro to do it properly and get a guarantee with it.

I did the back of my T4 in a 20% tint and its quite a nice dark and very hard to see in. My new T5 has limo tint in the back (5%), fitted by the PO, Its horrible as it is too dark and makes the inside of the car gloomy and near impossible to see out of in the dark. For the t4 I bought expensive film from ebay and it went ok, but pro jobs are loads better.

Hi folks, Lots of good ideas & suggestions, it's all appreciated ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Tint between 20% and 5% seems like the sensible "real world" range, so I'm expecting to end up with something around there. The beetle above gives an idea of the "new" stuff that has appeared since the last time I did any tinting, top marks for something a bit different! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Courtaulds Performance Film is the absolute best window tint around. I've tried others like Madico, 3M and others but none are as good. To shrink film on rear windows in one piece I've found using soapy water is much better than powder a it softens as it shrinks the film. Keep the factory edges at the top and bottom, divide it horizontally with a squeegee and work the upper first using your hand and hard tool and work out the bottom after. Trim as close to the glass as possible for a fit that won't roll off in the heat. I've been tinting in California since 1987 so I know what I'm talking about.

^ Hi, welcome to the forum, and thanks for the info ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Keeping the factory cut edge at the bottom make a lot of sense - obvious when you think about it. On the cars I've done in the past, I always used warm soapy water to slide the film around, then squeeze it from the center out (normally using a windscreen wiper blade). Not heard of using chalk until last week, still not sure how it would work but always happy to be educated. Good point about heat curling the edges but that isn't a problem here (North of England), we just have to cope with cold, wet, and snow in winter ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) the type of car in question (nice flat glass and square windows) - ![https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3674/12920746265_1b12289a61_b.jpg](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3674/12920746265_1b12289a61_b.jpg) more info & pics in the build thread in my signature ... retrorides.proboards.com/thread/88892I'm hoping to get the paintwork finished next week and start tinting the week after.
