Just send off the log book with the new engine size.
You need proof of where the engine has come from, so a sales receipt (real or 'obtained') is required, or try a forwarding letter saying you bought it like that.
If Dvla reply and say they need more evidence / a vehicle inspection / an engineers report, just send it straight back and chances are another person will deal with it and amend it without fuss, such is the DVLA...

Only problem I can foresee is they might want to know when engine change was done. If prior to your ownership then it might cause problems for previous owner - VED fraud as higher band probably applicable & possible Police consequences for invalid cover if they failed to inform their insurer.

Hi, I was told if you send off with change of engine size and number as said they may want further documentary proof. Apparently if you do one at a time say engine size first, then wait a month or two then send in with engine number change, they invariably just do the change with no requests.

If the DVLA chase the previous for failing to notify them that's their problem but the police won't waste their time chasing their tails over the fact that they may not have declared it to their insurer.

Colin Nope not in my experiance, they ask for proof every sodding time. Even when its their mistake in the first place, 1600cc LWB transit anybody?

This, 100%. I've been involved in a few engine swaps and this has always worked after a couple of months of to-ing and fro-ing with letters from garages (geniuine) and ebay receipts for the replacement engine and whatnot. Only problem I can foresee is they might want to know when engine change was done. If prior to your ownership then it might cause problems for previous owner - VED fraud as higher band probably applicable & possible Police consequences for invalid cover if they failed to inform their insurer. I'm not sure that's a valid concern for the OP. If it was his mate who did the work, maybe but a good mate wouldn't have sold a car with dodgy details. I just can't see the DVLA or VOSA or Plod following up on this.

So what happens when you have had an engine for about 6 years in the workshop with no receipt?

I'm sure you can 'find' the receipt if you try hard enough....

I think the only reason they ask for a receipt is to make sure that the engine isn't stollen. As I wasn't in the position of having the engine being in the garage for that amount of time I'm not sure what will happen but I'm sure if they have a issue with the engine then will ring you and you can explain where you got it etc and it should be ok.

I spoke to the DVLA today as they had sent me the same letter when I tried to register the new engine no and cc for the Daf's new lump. Apparently a letter from any garage on headed paper confirming the engine size, number and fuel type is enough. Handy as the AA won't inspect anything over 15 years old and the RAC want £300+ for a "classic vehicle" inspection! I got the local garage to print a letter off with the details on and have emailed a copy to them, I hope to see a V5 with the new details soon.

The new V5 arrived today! My best advice would be to phone and ask for the person that signed the letter that you have received, I assumed these were made up sudonyms but apparently they are actually real people! Suggest a letter from your local MOT place and ask if that would be acceptable. These poor souls at DVLA have lots of files cluttering their desks and just want rid, my contact was happy to accept my suggestion and provided her supervisors email address to which I sent a pic of the letter from my phone and that was that.

I wanted to update the V5 on my Mini before I sold it, so I sent the details off with the amended V5 and got a letter back asking for more information, same story as variously above...
I simply wrote them a letter back telling them exactly where the engine came from (eBay), how I was certain of the size (checked the pistons/bores before I installed it in the car - and gave the part number and piston size / overbore details), and that I wouldn't be taking the cylinder head off again to get photographic evidence and they'd just have to trust me.
No further communication and the V5 came back updated, everybody's happy! :-)
Admittedly, that's the same engine type, just from a later car, but I would like to think if you provide as much information as you can they won't cause too much of a fuss... I mean, you must have more about the engine from speaking to the seller to make sure the converted car was worth buying in the first place...?!
So, to officially answer the original question, follow the instructions on the V5 to amend vehicle details on the form. I would also suggest providing a short covering letter explaining a little of the history of the car, and as much information as you can about how it came to have a different engine fitted and the details of said engine (i.e. engine number). Then you shouldn't have any hassle down the line...
