Evening all,
With the DS on hold awaiting parts I have salvaged a 205GTi from the scrapyard. Now I have it home and I cannot get it started. I have changed the starter and plugs etc. now I am no mechanic, but I have checked spark but I can't seem to check the fuel. I can't hear the pump working, so is there an easy way to see if it working.
Any help would be great and thank you....

Hi. Check the obvious first - are the fuses all ok? Check if pump fuse is blown. Next - optional - does oil light go out? (on an unkown engine I often remove plugs and spin on starter to build oil pressure with no load on the engine ) As it's GTI - any idea if it's got (either standard or aftermarket) immobiliser? Just in case that's cutting power to the pump. You could remove the airfilter and squirt easy-start down the intake when you try to start it. Not best practice but it will confirm the ignition is ok. Can you run a direct feed (jumpwire from the battery?) to the pump as to test if the pump spin? (is pump visible or is it in the tank?? Check the Pug / GTI forums and see if they have a "why won't it start" checklist? (* Have been other forums exist but not needed to look) HTH

You can check the fuel pump on a GTi via the following: -Take off the injector line feed pipe (with rags around of it of course). See if it is pumping fuel out when cranking it over. If the above shows no fuel I would say that your fuel pump relay is at fault. In mine it went so that the car could not be started but once running it was fine. You could start it by squeezing the relay. A £20 relay fixed it in the end .

Thank you for your help. I replaced the relay as I know that wasn't working and I know that it is the fuel pump. But there are 2 types, but I cannot seem to get my type. It is black with a cable coming from the top with a connector on it, not the White one with the connector built onto it.

have a look on the 205gtidrivers forum, replacement fuel pumps were discussed in the past few days.
have you tried direct power to the pump?
