Good evening Retro Rides.
I have come here tonight to ask for some advice and pointer.
I recently downgraded my truck to a small caddy van, some what reluctantly I must say but now I have my van I want to make it as pleasant as possible. After taking my other half out in the van she has made me aware that its pretty freaking loud in my new purchase and since it has been pointed out I cannot stop noticing it.
I plan to use the van for some pretty long trips, around the 6/7 hour mark which isn't overly long, but enough for a echoing rattling load bed to get right on your last nerve. I also plan to use the van for shooting, so my dogs will be in the back and I would like it to be nice enough for them to doze off in comfort.
The noise seems to be coming from my unlined bare metal load bay of the van. It has a rubber load mat on the floor, but that's the lot so I am thinking this is the place for improvement. Due to its size, plastering every bare metal surface with Dynamat or some similar product is going to get very costly and will soon out value the van (that's a very serious possibility here, its that cheap). I do produce very big silencers at work for oil rigs, we pack these full of a fibreglass material and it is insanely effective and we have a lot of offcuts that go straight in the big but unfortunately this is extremely itchy and if it becomes loose it will be like falling into your loft insulation starkers, so that's another option that's out of the window.
Can any one make any other kind of suggestions? I am hoping for something that is cheaper than dynamat, in fact very cheap due to the large area that I have to cover yet still be effective. I don't really care what the installed product looks like, as I may try and carpet the rear of the van out at some later date.
I was thinking of using some kind of pliable felt or foam, I have found some stuff that comes in at 1/2" 80"x68" at £14.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UPHOLSTERY-FOAM-SHEET-HIGH-MEDIUM-DENSITY-80-x-68-ANY-THICKNESS-SIZE-/331366922493?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item7ddbadcfc7
I am sure this would have some effect, but would it be worth the trouble. The Grey stuff may even make the back of the van look a little more representable, and being of medium density maybe it would absorb sound a little better?
If any one can make any suggestions that would be excellent, I am very open to criticism here.
Cheers guys.
