Hi folks, I'm hoping for a little advice on my wife's MX5. Its a 2004 Mk2 so sort of retro!
It has taken to not starting when it is warm - it did it a few weeks ago - wouldn't start after having been left for a few hours, but eventually fired once the throttle had been pumped a few times. Today she drove it a couple of miles, stopped, did some shopping and it wouldn't fire. It turns over normally but no sign of firing. It did eventually fire up.
Any thoughts folks.
cheers

IMO pumping the pedal is a red herring here, it should not in theory affect things on an injected car.
If it were me I would try the simple things ; check out the fuel pump relay, see if it starts with it bypassed (as a temporary measure). If you cycle between the ignition being off and on (so as to prime the fuel pump many times) does it start then?
Does the fuel pump sound healthy? I'd have said fuel filter but I doubt it would affect things in the manner you describe.

When it next does it, have a spark plug to hand so you can pop a lead off quickly and see if its getting a good spark. Its not uncommon for the coils to go faulty on MX5s (although you would expect a miss fire when driving, but i know my missus wouldnt notice that : If it is getting a good spark atleast that rules that out!

I don't work on them but if it has the usual type of temperature sensor which enables the ECU to determine how hot the engine is (and therefore fix the fuel/air ratio) then that's another possibility. Many systems default to cold starting mixture, so if the coolant temp. sensor fails the ECU tries to start with a rich mix - and it won't fire. Flooring the throttle usually gets them going, so next time it does it try that and see what happens.
The only thing is that after a few hours it ought to have fired up, the CTS is only usually problem when it's really hot, ie only been stopped for a short time.

As Taurus says the common problem is the green temp sensor at the back of the block. It fails and the engine thinks its cold, it is a bit of a swine to replace.

Temp sensor could be favourite. Preludes did this. On older engines, tight tappets used to cause hot starting problems. Less common that now.

Correct, but it does have a double optical or hall sensor (year dependant) on the back of the head..
