Should manage more than that but use that as a worse case scenario.

I had a hired SWB FWD Tranny a few years ago and was paranoid about fuel consumption so drove as carefully as possible. Low 30's when empty and mid to high 20's when loaded over 600 miles. With any large fronted vehicle speed and wind resistance make a big difference so you might find sticking to 50 mph could give far better economy than 60+ mph.

really depends which one it is, a decent motorway run at 70 in a MK7 2.0 85 bhp 5 speed van will give you 36 mpg roughly.

We hired a Transit Jumbo Hitop last year one of the Mk7 things averaged 22mpg on a 600 mile round trip (300 laden/ 300 empty) driven like a little old lady 60mph on the motorway. Would have been cheaper to use my Mk2 and hired a trailer!

Would have been cheaper to use my Mk2 and hired a trailer! This makes the 21mpg my T4 Caravelle achieved when towing sound excellent, especially as it's a lwb VR6 auto! My 60 plate 2.2TDCi Transit averages 33mpg according to the company data from the tracker. It's FWD, low roof and short wheelbase but weighs 2.6 tonne, use is a mixture of town and motorway with plenty of towing and idling. I reckon you could get close to 40mpg with a light load and steady 60-65mph on a motorway run.

well hired the van ended up with a lwb had some fuel in it that according to the computer was good for 78 miles but don't think that it was very accurate I added 28 liters and we did 298 miles. but on the way back it got down 60 miles and the fuel light was on. speed was about 65 and think the van was governed as it wouldn't go over 70.
