With Japfest only a week away I've given up on completing the stereo build ready for it so I'm focusing my attention to the elements that are visible from the outside of the bus and I'll leave it closed during the day to hide the half finished status of the build. The most visible elements of the audio build are the A pillars and rather than refit them in standard form I decided to try and get the tweeter builds complete this week. First up, plan A - fitting 360 degree adjustable mounts to the A pillars with the main bar poking through the trim panel... Fitted... Hole drilled in trim panel, just need to space out the mount so that the adjustable section can be fitted to it... Spaced out with sound deadening pieces to test... I tried to refit trim panel at which point I discovered that the panel now no longer fits over the mount so onto plan B and fixing the mount to the a pillar trim panel instead, its a solid enough fitting but not quite as tidy, swapping the bolts to black will help especially when the panel and pod are trimmed in black. I needed to cut recesses for speaker connectors in the front layer of each tweeter pod... And fit a camera tripod adaptor into the back panel so the pod can be fitted to the mount... Test... Glued together and clamped for the night (they're both done but only took a photo of one)... The glue and vinyl are with the courier so can retrim them once they arrive, the MDF will be primered first to make it less absorbent and more weather proof. I'm hoping to get the doors sound deadened tomorrow and upper door cards back on to make the doors a bit more presentable for Japfest even if I run out of time to get the speaker builds complete.

Back on it today in the sunshine. I gave the tweeter pods a quick rub around with 120 grit on a mouse sander ... But bulk of work was on the door cards. Longer bolts are here, decided on black so they blend in with the recesses on the speakers... Recesses cut into layer 2 with a 25mm spade drill bit where the nuts will sit behind layer 3... Speaker holes cut out with jigsaw, good enough for hidden cuts... The speakers are a little further back on the driver's side so i had to cut a bit away from layers 1 & 2 so they weren't in the way of the speaker magnets... Speakers bolted on right through layers 3,4&5 and layer 3 bolted to layers 1 & 2... And fitted to door... The door even closes! Close-up... And more of the same for passenger side...

Sound deadening the doors started at lunchtime, a really therapeutic way to spend half an hour, and did a bit more when I got home. I need to cut some metal out of the middle before I apply deadening to the bare area.

Great progress, nice to see some speakers going into the car.
How effective is that sound deadening to outside noise?

Great progress, nice to see some speakers going into the car. How effective is that sound deadening to outside noise? Don't get carried away - only test fitting for now and guys over on talkaudio have suggested a problem with the setup so a bit more work required yet! (On top of the already expected list of work) It's difficult to tell yet - because the upper door card is not refitted yet so the outside noise is still more than standard. You can tell a big difference in the sound of the metal itself when you knock it though.

After work I went to the courier depot to collect my vinyl, glue, and brushes delivery from AS Trim - a specialist in auto fabrics and sundries. What started off as a little tester after the bedtime routine turned into a five and half hour trimming session. As long as everything is still stuck together by tomorrow (this) evening I'll be very pleased with my evening's work. Various stages... First tweeter pod trimmed... Matching pair... Whilst I was doing well and everything was out I decided to carry on and trim the a pillar covers... Fingers crossed they're still all as one tomorrow night.

This is an astonishing amount of work, I'd never realised so much had to go into an install like this.

This is an astonishing amount of work, I'd never realised so much had to go into an install like this. Neither did I! I've stripped and retrimmed bits and put cars back together before but not done an audio build to this extent before. It makes a big difference having to fit time around entertaining a child too!

Front bumper on... Centre post wrapped in black vinyl... Grills fitted ... The changes are pretty subtle so a before photo... Fog light holes filled Reg plate raised area cut out, rebuilt, and smoothed Damage on driver's side edge of front bumper that I hid with the kerb feeler has been repaired Lower grill powder coated Upper grill resprayed Front plate is being mounted on a bracket so that it sits in front of the lower grill. I've also had the holes and cut outs left from removing the lower section of the rear bumper repaired and smoothed but not taken rear photos yet.

Subtle, but makes a big difference because it tidies the front end up loads. I'm guessing the new plate will be removable for show use, it's a shame you have to put one on with the front end looking like it does now.

Yes exactly that - using a door stop as a spacer it will be bolted in front of lower grill into a standard mounting hole.
