I've been rocking around in an Audi A4 Cab for the last couple a years and while its pleasant enough it doesn't flick my switches like my old S-Type did and as there's no point selling a cabriolet when its cold I've had 6 months to decide on a replacement. In the end I came to the conclusion that it had to be a British barge with 2 doors and more or less everything on my shortlist was either Jaguar XJS or Rover 800 coupe shaped Now this is to be my daily and must be able to cart the family around. Given the price of fuel and that every review of the XJS says don't bother using the rear seats unless your passengers are under the age of six rears old the big old Jag was edging it and following a trip to the NEC in November my mind was made up. I've been looking for a while and wanted a later car as they have the galvanised body and the aluminium AJ16 engine. In the end I found perfect cars in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Wight but being a lazy sod didn't do anything about it until this turned up on the bay a couple of weeks ago in Rugby. Exactly what I was after and owned by a JLR employee my head was turned. Anyway I picked it up yesterday and it's everything I expected it to be and even the Mrs seems mildly impressed. There are a few bits to sort out in like the scuttle at the bottom of the windscreen and some of the veneers are faded but other than that she's in remarkable condition. So having 6 & 3 year old children has forced my hand into running this as a sensible daily - I'm still not 100% sure whether this is an act of genius or insanity Anyway here's some photos

I do like an XJS and the AJ6 4.0 engine was an absolute peach in my old XJ40 so this is a winning combo! Looks like a good buy I'd love a manual XJS one day..

I used to fit reseal windscreens in xjs's at main dealers in the late 80's and 90's, the early ones leaked terribly and would get into the British Leyland electrics, the fitters/mechanics hated them and that has always made me think that they were rubbish, but I have been awaken seeing just how beautiful these have become, I can't see me ever owning one due to costs involved but would love to have a drive in one again, very nice looking car you can be proud of.

Yeah, mine's really crappy around the windscreen where someone's bodged it badly in past. I should have some grotty photos next week as it's going into my local jag indy this weekend for the screen to be taken out and all the rot dealt with properly. I've also discovered that the AC, clock and radio also all seem to have a life of their own so they're next on the list. That said it really is a lovely thing to drive. Maybe it says more about me but it's the best handling car I've owned by a long margin. It's also one of those cars that when you park, you look at it as you walk away and it makes you smile

My word, that really does look very smart indeed... You just cannot beat a Jaguar for a bit of class!
The XJS (or XJ-S!) seems to really be on the rise price wise right now and now is the time to buy before things get a little bit silly!!!
It looks like you've struck just at the right time and nabbed something really very special...
Lovely stuff!

Reckon the 'S' has aged very gracefully and what was once considered, by some when new, as ugly after the E-Type, has matured into a fine looking motor. And this is a beauty.
"you look at it as you walk away and it makes you smile" - Any motor that does this gives a warm feeling.
I still look at the P38 in the same way after nearly two years. Mebbie I'm odd that way?

that is lovely. Will bookmark this thread as might fancy one as a daily to replace the boring Accord we have currently. Be interesting to hear how you get on with MPG and the electrics.

Oh my! It's sad but I'm sure many of these old beasts have gone to a rusty grave for having rot like that, I'm really glad this one is in good hands and will be kept alive. They are superb looking cars. My dad had an '88 3.6 manual painted in Rover Nightfire with S2 E-Type wire wheels years ago, I wish he hadn't sold it.

My jaw dropped as I scrolled down! I thought from the first picture that you were having the windscreen replaced..! Well done for doing things properly, an XJS is a glorious thing.

I'm glad you are repairing it properly. The XJS can rust spectacularly unfortunately, but then it is a 1970s design.
