Could anybody point me in the right direction with this? My Merc carries a personal registration plate, one of those Irish ones with letters at the start and numbers at the end. I bloody hate personal number plates ( each to their own tho) and particularly dislike the one on my car, it looks cheap and an after thought. I know the original registration for the car so how do I contact the DVLA and request getting it back? I'm more than happy to just give up the plate already on the car so, that's not an issue for me. What department do I need to contact, what form do I need to fill out and any idea of cost? Thanks

There may be a cheaper way, but if you put the plate on retention, they will issue the old number if still applicable, or a new age related one.
Like I say there may be a cheaper way to do the same especially if you give the numberplate to a trader who can see some value in it, they may cover the fees for you in exchange for the plate.

Maybe offer it for sale on here - someone might offer to pay your DVLA fees and a bit more

I went into the Local Office and got the ball rolling there but also spoke to someone in a Post Office about it because it's sort of within the remit of what they now do. I got a W124 with a not terrible "personalised" plate that starts with a B rather than an G and enquired about getting rid of it but it turns out the car was first registered with that plate.

I think you just send a letter saying what you want to do. And as mentioned above you must get a new v5 and that costs £25.00
You've got to watch out for the DVLA fiddling about with the road tax though. Unbelievably, when I did this last year they tried to stitch me up for a penalty for not paying tax against the old registration number when the renewal came up.
I'll say it again, it's so incredible. They actually issued a penalty against the old registration number for not paying road tax and they're still pursuing it now. The car is taxed but now has its original registration number. At the time of the exchange of plates the old registration had 2 months of tax remaining. I guess they just messed up in their administration somewhere. But as with any of these sorts of penalties it isn't possible to simply phone them an inform them of their mistake. They won't accept that, they believe that they're infallible and that you're likely to be lying because you're trying to 'get away with it'
So frustrating, just watch out for that. Mine was one of those silly NI number plates as well.
