So as the GT6 is going to need trailering somewhere to be painted at some point and the dog doing his best to destroy the inside of the other halfs golf, I'm in need of a tow car. I've been watching and waiting for the right one for at least 6 months now and have ended up coming home with this. £800 worth of Land Rover Discovery. 109000 miles, service history up to 105000 miles, MOT up to may Good points - Nearly no rust. Just a small area in the inner wing under the battery. - Engine is sweet as a nut. 3.9V8 on LPG - It's a manual - sunroofs don't leak - new tyres - new discs and pads Not so good points - clutch is slipping - nearside rear wheel bearing needs doing - LPG needs a service - has the land rover "death rattle" i.e. when you hit a bump at anything over 60 you get a persistant shaking until you apply the brakes and slow it down. I've bought a full car bush set which will hopefully cure it For the money I think I may have got a bit of a bargain. Everything else I've looked at either had major rust or was hiding rust. It's clearly been neglected by the last few owners and didnt look like it had been washed in years when I got it but it made it 6 hours back from wales with no issues aside from the clutch slipping a bit if you boot it. My plans with it are to get it serviced and re-bushed. Maybe some new shock absorbers. Then give it a good rust treating and undersealing and gradually bring it up to scratch. Oh and lose some silencers. I need to hear that V8 noise! The previous owner thought it was a Goodwood special edition. I've looked into that a bit and found that 500 were made and only one badged as a goodwood as the goodwood family had issues about it. It had a walnut dash, different headrests and extra roof bars. Colour is Epsom green. No idea if it is a special edition or not but I've peeled off all the walnut from the inside as it was all way past it. I'll chuck up some more pictures if anyone's interested I finished the ammo box speaker too. It makes a great workshop radio It just needs a voltmeter adding Cheers

I'd suggest checking the swivel preloads on the front axle. They can be reshimmed quite easily if they're a bit loose, or replace the bearings completely with relative ease if needed.
More likely to cure the 'death wobble' than changing the bushes.

Well its been a long time and no updates. But I have been busy First off the Land-Rover. What I thought was going to be "just a tickle with the welder on a front body mount" turned into most of both the sills, repairs to rear body mounts and rear arches, complete front body mounts both sides along with most of both front footwells and a fair bit to the inner front wheel arches. Sorry for the truly awful pictures but yeah tough Anyway, stonechiped, waxoiled and cavity waxed everything so hopefully it'll last another year Its also had both front swivel hubs and swivel bearings along with adjusting the steering box to cure the death wobble which it has....mostly. it needs a new steering damper. Theres oil leaking from it. Its also had a water pump, belt and tensioner as after ignoring the sound of mechanical torture coming from it, the impeller shaft sheared clean off leaving me stranded at sainsburys While putting a new water pump on I got the lpg going and it lasted a whole 1 day before the electrical side of it died again leaving me stranded although i got it going by pulling the plugs out of the LPG llambda emulators. still need to get round to replacing that as its now electrically dead So to celebrate the breakdowns I thought I'd give it a service and generally sort it out a bit so its had everything i can think of except new brake fluid which is still on my list plugs leads exhaust manifold gaskets(blowing) air filter oil filter oil coolant dizzy cap, rotor, vacuum line water pump, belt, tensioner water hoses idle air control valve (hunting) clutch kit (slipping) gearbox oil transfer box oil diff oils wipers re-wrapped wiring loom(front) rear wheel bearing rear brake pads etc etc etc ....and an MOT which it passed. advisorys on bushes. I have a full polybush set. also on list Oh rocker cover gaskets were done and painted the rockers while I was at it in crackle paint. they're certainly more red Dog is thinking "why are you painting them red you idiot" Also when one takes exhaust manifolds off, one just has to start it to see what it sounds like. Although I cant get the video up It is now running pretty nicely although some kids have climbed on the roof at the back and bent it in which has lead to the sunroof leaking. So ive had to silicone it. Annoyed about that one. Her indoors decided to park it at the end of the street. Not happy. It is however proving itself useful and will be more so with a fresh lpg kit. Its very good at hauling camping gear and dog and general dutys like that and tip runs. I've also been able to go and collect bulky bits for the GT6

I did want to post a couple of videos. One of the Landy and some of the rally action day at Snetterton. It will have to wait till I'm somewhere with better internet. Anyway I'put a pic up of some action at rally action day as a teaser( I'm over egging it a bit. my videos are rubbish..as are my pics) I've been plodding on with the GT6. Been out the country for a few months so not a lot has happened. The main thing I've been cracking on with is repairs to the inner wheel tubs at the back(they're made of two halves, inner and outer). I'm replacing the outer halves completely as I don't want any trace of rust in the wheel arch lip but I'm worried about the shell moving if I cut out the inner so I'm just repairing them. And adding seat belt mounts along the way. Also the bit of inner wing needed replacing just behind the inner rear wheel tubs alond with a lot of the mating boot floor around the lower half of the inner wheel tubs. so pics to prove or it didnt happen This side has had all the bumper iron brackets remade too and said bumper irons refitted along with the fuel tank brackets. Oh and the outer wheel tub welded on Similar story on t'other side but not as bad The usual mix of rust, arc'd on mot patches and the previous owner abysmal welding But, it's only metal and was soon cut out/pulled off by hand and replaced and a lot more besides this. I really am bad at taking photos All coated with red oxide to protect it

And back onto the other side, I painted the inner wing and inside the wing in body colour to make sure everything has paint on it(will also get cavity wax later on)and welded it on have also had a bit of luck and scored some bargains I've sourced a steel bonnet and quarter valances to replace the rubbish fibreglass ones as this now seems to be a full restoration, along with; replacement front wing( will need another for the other side) front valance(was missing) overdrive prop standard width GT6 wheels ( I didnt want to band the dunlop ones I have as they're relatively rare ) nif naf bits And i manage to sell the old stuff along with a patter part rear wing and manual gear box for more than this lot cost inc fuel, so happy days!

Hi everyone A small bit of progress today in between rain showers I bit the bullet and cut a hole in my new wing for the filler cap. After measuring, re-measuring and measuring again I went for it and being a bit cautious cut it slightly too small necessitating careful trimming all round. But that meant I got a very close fit all round. Carefully welded and ground flush-ish only some very slight warping which I should be able to knock out. Splash of etch and red oxide for now I then spent the rest of the day stripping the inside of the boot floor and rear valance to bare metal, rust converting, etching and then a coat of red oxide. Its taking a very long time for the paint to dry a the moment so tomorrow I'm going to go and buy a little fan heater to try and warm the panels and paint up a bit. Also tomorrow ill weld on the RH side bumper iron brackets into the boot. Then I've got to get the tar off the rear axle hump before painting and then onto seam sealing. Once thats done I can finally get some Emerald green in there

Evening Managed to get an afternoon outside today First job was to weld in the bumper iron brackets and clean up and fit the bumper irons themselves These two brackets arrowed And fitted Next job was to fit the RH boot floor cover bracket And then onto getting more of that poxy tar off the driveshaft hump and finally some seam sealing. I'm not the best at this and might mask up edges next time. At least its in the boot where it wont get seen I also found time to strip and paint the diff inspection cover And that brings me up to date. Next jobs are to scuff up the driveshaft hump for paint and then paint the back and LH side of the boot floor and inner wing. Then I need to order a RH rear wing so I can get the outer wheel tub on that side lined up and welded in

Well the weather today was a PITA! love working outside I started off by getting the RH outer wheel tub on. Spot welded to the inner wheel tub and seam welded to the rest of the wing And then the lower seatbelt mount for inertia reel seatbelts It was hammering it down by this point so I decided to recycle the old wing and turn it into something I can hang things from Then after a bit it cleared up so I got on with taking the axle hump to bare metal, seam sealing and using my last can of green on the inside And that brings that up to date. I'm at the point now where I really need to buy a RH rear wing. At nigh on £250 I'm still hoping on chancing on one on ebay or something like I did with the LH Also I may have made the classic error of having a few drinks and then browsing ebay. Obviously what I don't need now is yet another project but when SWMBO gives the green light and actually offers to help on said project, who am I to argue....

And here it is Due to pick it up at the end of the month. Bought sight unseen. How hard can it be? Well £395 has bought me an early 1979/1980 VW Transporter Camper with no doors, a missing window, no carbs etc. Yes its been ravaged for parts. But... parts are relatively easy to come by and lets be honest, its going to need a lot of bodywork and paint first Hopefully it turns out to be as solid as it looks

£ 395....?! I thought any transporter would have had another zero on the end to cover scene tax...... hope no nasty surprises!Have a good look around the join where the fibreglass top fits on the original roof edges - they can be really horrible there.
GT6 is coming on well. Wings do come up from time to time. I got lucky a couple of months back and scored a pair of NOS Spitfire wings and light panel for £ 250 on ebay. Probably helped that they were in the depths of Devon and the seller wouldn't ship.
What's got me a bit stuck on my GT6 is the rear deck edge between hatch and lamp panel. This was in gruesome condition having been crashed, cut off, "straightened" apparently by bashing it on a knobbly tree trunk with some rocks then welding/brazing it back on before plastering it with body solder - 1/2" thick in places. Not finished off properly along the rear edge, so now rotting again under the solder. Can't find another panel new or used so will have to try and make one. It's big and a compound curve....
The wing you've got hung on your wall looks a heck of lot better than the one we repaired on our spitfire?

That early slider will be hard to come by, and £££, buy one with a rotten bottom and weld a new one in, I did both on my twin slider and they're easily done.
A mate of mine has just taken lpg kit off his, dunno if he's selling, or if you'd be interested
I might have a few bits too

The wing you've got hung on your wall looks a heck of lot better than the one we repaired on our spitfire? Nick Hi Nick Yeah it does seem cheap. The seller messaged me after arranging to pick up saying he thinks i have a bargain. He also says it very rust free apart from a bit on the drivers wheel arch. We shall see. I managed a similar trick with some rear wings from devon. One genuine and the other pattern. Managed to sell the pattern one for what the pair cost me. Hopefully a genuine or maybe even a NOS wing will turn up for me. But i think for the moment the vw will take some time and funds. When i went down to kent to get the bonnet, the seller had a GT6 shell. The senario was that the outbuilding he was working on it was needed by the business he worked for and it had been sat for years without much progress. It was in fairly bad shape in some places but good in others.and hadnt been crashed. Nearly all of it has gone now. I think it was pretty much the shell and some more awkward stuff to post. He said he'd scrapped 12 6 cylinder engine blocks a month before i got there. He was wanting rid of the shell. The parts i bought off him were very cheap so i cant imagine hed want much. I can put you in touch if you like? Cheers Ivan

I have no experience with anything aircooled vw so this is all new to me. I didnt realise there where different types of sliding doors. I'd be interested in the lpg kit. Is it for the hob/fridge or for the engine? Once ive got it here i can start making an extensive list of parts I'm in need of. I think it will be a big one. Also being an early oneim not sure if it has power brakes or steering. It does have a 2 litre aircooled petrol rather than the 1.6 so I'm hoping theres some life in that Any parts you think i may need will be very useful Cheers Ivan
