I fancy a Go-Pro but not sure if it's something I'd used then would sit in a drawer for the rest of time so have been looking at the sub £30 'helmet' camera on eBay. Only as a temporary thing to see how I get on with it....has anyone used one, any particular one to recommend? This is e kind of thing I'm looking into...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HD-Helmet-Digital-Video-Waterproof-Camera-Camcorder-Sport-DV-1280-720-720P-UK-/331472041973?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4d2d45f7f5 Only for car based short films, nothing too brutal! That particular one might be cheaper because of the limited operating system. I bought a cheap one off ebay (not the same at the one linked to) and it was OK, but the quality was definitely a case of you got what you paid for.
I ended up spending out on a Mio which is more expensive and much better quality.
In the end - bang for your buck - the cheap ones aren't such good value. A cheap one will frustrate you so you won't want to use it. A good one is so good to use you will want to use it.

Are you wanting to film "out of the car" or "the car"? I've had a few ebay dashcams, and the video quality is surprisingly good especially for the price. Sound is universally rubbish though. I bought this a year ago: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310752336819?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649here's some sample videos (click the settings and put it into 1080p mode) At night it takes much better video than my £500 DSLR!

Can you take stills on it? I'm less interested in evidence than the spotted thread, it must be said...

Google Mobius action cam, I have one, they are awesome, same video quality as a go pro in a package the size of a tictac box. Don't buy one from ebay uk, you need to order it from the genuine seller in China else you'll get a poor fake (if you see a bad video on youtube, its a fake) £43 and mine was delivered within the week. I use it as a dashcam, it comes on with the car and does loop recording so when the card gets full it goes back to the start so you always have a video! I also use it when I go snowboarding on my helmet Here's the link to the genuine seller, cant rate him enough ClickyAnd here have a youtube comparison between it and the scene boy! Also a clicky...

But I was wondering how much data storage I would need and how much power it might consume? My car might not move for a week at a time depending on my work shifts, and wondered how much it would draw from the battery?

The internal battery will last about 80 mins
You could hook it up to a perm live though - its not gonna kill the car batt. It also does motion detection so will only record when it see's something.
I have a 32gig card in mine and that's about 4 hours of vids iirc. I think you can fit upto 64gig cards. So with motion detection it could go on forever!
I really cant rate the thing enough, for the price its an awesome bit of kit with video quality that puts cameras 4 times the price to shame!

Thanks for that info. It does look like a great performer, but I think the lack of a screen will annoy me after a while, so I think I might go for something different, probably the Mini806.
