1973 UK Right hand drive VW Baywindow tin-top PROJECT Camper van for sale. Van does start, it idles, drives, steers and shifts well, brakes can only be described as “scary”!
The Good -
Nice running recon 1600cc Twin port engine with no rattles and not smoky.
Gearbox shifts well.
Main chassis rails appear to be solid.
Front beam appears to be solid.
Been Ziebarted from new (loads of the plastic grommets where the treatment was injected).
Tailgate and engine lid good.
Front seats good.
Reasonable amount of history and old MOT’s.
Reasonable amount of welding already done - Complete Front panel, front & rear N/S arches replaced, N/S sill replaced, N/s rear corner replaced.
Original sink / stove included, original Devon louvered window fitted, original curtain rails fitted.
Roof and gutters all appear good.
The Bad -
RUST. The cab and rear floor needs work, O/S sill, wheel arches, rear corner and rear panel all need work, as do the O/S outriggers, around the louvred window, plus I am sure that more will be discovered when work starts! I really cannot describe each and every bit of rust, best bet is to come and have a look.
No interior apart from front seats and cooker/ sink. Which means you can see EXACTLY what you are getting, nothing hidden.
Brakes are poor, front caliper on N/S sticking on.
Poor repair on O/S “long” panel will need to be replaced (amongst others!).
Sliding door mechanism broken.
Van needs restoration!!! What you see is what you get, there are no bumpers, no other interior bits, no badge, there ARE wipers, the motor is behind the dash.
This van is definitely a project, be under no illusions it will not be on the road after a weekends worth of work, it needs a restoration and a mechanical overhaul, presumably plus more than I have spotted whilst clearing it out. However, as UK buses go, it is a good “blank canvas” starting point for someone who wants to start from scratch. Please come and have a look if you are interested, have a poke around, drink in all of the “patina” for yourself!
It was purchased as part of a “package deal” with another car that we wanted. It has been in dry storage for around 5 years, hence is for sale. The bus is located in Watford, WD3 3AT, and can be inspected on a ramp (by prior arrangement). You can start it and have a drive in the private yard. It will drive onto a trailer or a low-loader, but certainly cannot be driven away. Please come have a look for yourself, I have described the van as best as I can without droning on for hours!!
Any questions please call me, Gary, on 07968 362494, please no texts, give me a call, I am friendly!! and if my phone goes to voicemail, please leave me a message and I will call you back.
Price, £2350 ovno. Sorry, but not interested in a swap, just want to sell it to someone who will resurrect this van and have enjoyment of camping in it. We have the V5 as well, so when the bus is ready for the road, it will be tax exempt under the new rules, hurrah!
Short video of bus moving under its own steam!!!!
