Well, the time has come. I'm selling my 5 door 1990 Mk2 Golf GTI finished in Alpine White. It has 174k on the clock (this will rise as it's used daily) and it's MOT'd until November 2015. I'm located just outside Wednesbury in the Black Country. I'm looking for £1300 ono.
My phone number is 07446279725 or email scumbag45@hotmail.com
It has 5 doors, a manual sunroof and power steering which all work! It's lowered on FK Highsport coilovers but drives comfortably and sits high enough to use daily. Please don't be put off by the mileage.
It comes with a huge file of receipts going back to the early 90's and there's a couple of rolling road readouts.
I've owned the car for just over three years and in that time the only blip was when the head gasket burnt out between 1 & 2 cylinders. In the 3 years I've had it the following work has been done by myself or my mate who is a VAG tech.
I've got receipts for all the parts used -
Front & rear wheel bearings
Inner & outer CV gaiters
New wishbones & bushes
Anti rollbar bushes
Waterpump replaced
Track rod ends
Lower Balljoints
Changed Gearbox oil
Exhaust downpipe & gasket
Backbox was blowing so replaced with a s/s magnex backbox
Gear linkage refurbed using a kit supplied by GSF
New Battery
Front & side coolant flanges including both temp sensors
Replaced front foglights using a set of new Mk3 units (just swap the lenses over)
In early 2013 it started to misfire badly. In my search for the issue I replaced -
Dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads & coil
It turned out that the Head gasket had failed between 1 & 2 cylinder. While the head was off, it was cleaned and the tappets were replaced for a set of FEBI Bilstein ones. While the head was off I replaced the sump and oil cooler gaskets. When we put it back together, we replaced the rocker cover gasket, cambelt, alternator and PAS belts. It was all timed up properly and I've since covered 9,000 miles with no issues since. It hadn't overheated or anything so the head didn't need skimming or any of that gubbins.
I have also replaced all four of the shocks in the coilovers over the last twelve months. the O/S front failed first then the N/S rear failed. I bought the replacements from FK and had to have them sent directly from Germany, which was a ballache. When I refitted the coilovers, I replaced the front & rear top mounts. Once it was all finished I had the tracking & camber all sorted (I have receipts for this)
Just before Christmas I replaced the fuel pump housing and seal as the old housing had cracked and was weeping petrol. Since I've owned it I've serviced it around every six months. I changed the plugs, oil & filter, air filter & fuel filter in September.
It's nice and tight and drives as you'd expect a Mk2 GTI would. I sold the original steels after fitting the Rial Cobra alloy wheels which were a bargain. I was gobsmacked how much I sold the steels for, but hey, that's the VW scene for ya!
Please bear in mind, this is a 25 year-old motor so is NOT in showroom condition. It gets a lot of interest from people and is very clean for it's age. There's a bit of grot on the inside of the passenger door and the roof lining ideally needs recovering. It's a 5 door so probably not as desireable as the 3 but there's more room and it's great if you have sprogs like me. I've just started to lose interest really, and I've started finding myself looking in the classifieds all over the net so I know it is the time to sell.
I'm open to a part x as long as it's similar value and got an MOT. I'm looking at Volvo 850 T5's, Audi 80/100, early A3 1.8T or anything retro and interesting.
