I need help. I'm in a state of uncertainty regarding this little machine: Its an '89 136 so its nothing too special. But it was in the same family from new until 2005 and has only covered 23,000 miles. Inside is mint and the whole thing is totally original. Unfortunately, its rusty. The passenger side arch is well away, the other one is scabby and one of the sills needed patching for the MOT. Both wings also have some rust, as do the door bottoms and a few other minor scabs else where. When I pass my test [and I reckon I'm looking at late summer] I'm going to want to use this quite a bit and probably every day all through the winter. Now I can't decide whether to keep it going with my limited budget or let it go to someone else who will hopefully spend the money required and get it looking perfect. At which point buying myself a much more readily available Favorit or something that will be less of a heart ache to use during the winter and park a few metres away from the North Sea every day. On the other hand, its a Rapid. Its a "proper" Skoda. I love it. Should I just grin and bear it, or let it go to someone with a bigger wallet? I just don't know. Thoughts please - its been bugging me for a while.

This car has GRP front wings, but he custom made them himself. I'm worried about the state of the inner sills too. They always rust on Rapids.

thought this one was mint! IF you have a ready and able buyer, let it go, i'd say. i don't want to be negative about these wonderful cars, but i learnt in an estelle, then after the test moved to a favorit. I'm glad i did, because all the accidents i had in my first year wouldn't have been so cool in a RE/RD. and the favorit is still a 'proper' skoda. especially a mk1, get one of those without injection and you'll be grand. i just find them easier to maintain, more durable, and, if I'm honest, more reliable. either way, id get a fav to start with. injection/mk2 is lower insurance though btw. whether you keep the rapid or not

The rust doesn't *sound* that bad - I'd keep it! I heartily recommend having a Skoda Rapid as a first car! ;D

I'm not sure Alistair. I'd like to think that they would do it justice.
In the ideal world it needs new metal on the arches and sills, new front wings, and a new coat of paint.
I think I should stop being a wimp and start trying to sort out the rust on the doors and stuff. I've had an offer from a friend who runs a bodyshop. He said he'll teach me how to weld and put new arches on it with me.
So maybe I should stop moaning, keep saving and pass my freaking test!

keep it defo who else would love it as much as you and dave? exactly! can be done in budget, and welding is not that hard to grasp. do it proud, protect, and enjoy. then mod the hell outta it one step at a time, honestly... you'll do it easy.

Well its catch 22. I used a bike this last winter, and longed for a car with heaters.
Now I have a car, I don't want to use it in winter. DaveRapid recomends old engine oil for rust prevention I believe. Does it really work?
I could use a bike again this winter, but it'll hopefully be a ropey 78 machine that won't take kindly to salt I wouldn't of thought.

But you know what its like, I just can't say no to a Rapid. indeed, i'm the same with estelles! but if you have room for a teeny fav hatch, ebay that mofo for £12.27 and rock on through the summer. do something stupid like paint every panel different to keep you entertained

I used to park next to a green Datsun 180B (I think) estate in Bury St Edmunds which was permanently coated in oil from the tops of the sills down, and it was spotless. The guys who worked in the multi storey car park often used to curse word about it dripping though! Haven't seen the car since about 2001 sadly. Anyway: I'd hang onto it! Learn to weld FTW! Just be careful where you park, and keep it Waxoyled. It will rock.

You definately should keep it and run it, like Re-an said, cant see it bieng looked after any better with anyone else! Treat the rust, waxoyl/old engine oil it up, run it and enjoy it, thats what I reckon. Treat it to a jet-wash under the arches periodically during winter to get rid of any road salt and wet mud, it will be fine. Having cars standing for 6 months 'til the weather gets better can sometimes create more problems that it avoids in my experience It needn't cost a lot to run a classic daily... it takes more time and commitment than cash really IMO
