Well, hopefully, I should be making a trip down to one of the "nicer parts of London" early tomorrow morning to pick up this.... Another flea bay purchase which, fingers crossed, will be a good un ( ive bought not so great before) and hopefully wont make me wince in the way that my last purchase, a Scimitar, did after a 160 mile journey via trains to pick it up. I had been hunting around for an Alfa but, honestly, what I wanted was thin on the ground/already sold and I cannot lie about the odd concern or three I had about their fragile reputation. So I decided to move down to the next car on my bucket list, a nice W126 Mercedes. Well I had a space on the driveway.. What I know about it is what Ive asked and, well, it seems ok, money has been spent on it and, naturally, Ive been assured by the seller that the car is luverleeeeee. The only thing I need do now is go and get it and negotiate the streets of SW London ( surrey....) and get it back to Norfolk in on piece. I cannot lie, I'm really looking forwards to getting it. Doesn't seen too shabby for a grand, eh.

Erm hi is it available in square please.. lol Looks very clean, try and look behind those p[lastic sill covers if you can. That's 420 as in 4.2 V8? Yes, it is rather square..... Its actually nice, we now live in a world where one car looks just like any other and are blob shaped to maximise efficiency or something. Yep, a 4.2 V8 which isn't the biggest or the smallest engine in the range, that's fine by me as I want to enjoy the "sitting In my lounge" experience which doesn't call for me to drive it like I stole it. I will have a fair old poke around it once its home and I have a spare hour or two. If its crusty, well, so be it, I will just have to get the welder out and have a play. I'm, sort of, hoping that it has survived for so long because A: Its a Mercedes and B: People have spent money and time looking after it. Fingers crossed. PS: Anybody know of a good Merc forum with plenty of UK members? Ta.

Nice, nice and very nice...
The W126 played a big part in my youthful years as my old man drove company big-wigs around in them and we had a fair few of these lovely machines!
That 420 looks very nice and I'm sure that there won't be too many horrors lurking within...
Please let us know more as soon as you have the pleasure of picking it up.
Good luck sir!

Lovely luxurious old ladies, these W126's. They have a few potentially very expensive weak points, but the expensive part is usually related to hours of labour, more than the cost of spare parts. Rust, unfortunately is a major problem. Consult the forums for typical locations to watch out for and repair asap. The good news is that if you are prepared to spend the hours, they become surprisingly affordable. Consider, amongs others, the following sites: mercedesforum.com/forum/www.benzworld.org/www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/Register and enjoy the assistance of a lot of helpful, informed and experienced enthusiasts. I hope you many years of travelling in class!

Thank you for the kind words and advice, always appreciated. I'm, sort of, going to go into rant mode here. I despair at all the utter f***tards who simply cannot seem to be able to show any honesty when advertising a car on fleabay. The "passenger electric window doesn't work" was actually BOTH passenger AND fuggin drivers and, for some strange reason from the point of advertising the car to me sodding off in it into the sunset the handbrake stopped working. There was also somesort of brake binding, a horrendous screeching noise, when pulling away in heavy London traffic, although this has seemed to disappear. So what did £1000 get me? Well it actually got me a road going boat, a car that doesn't actually cover ground but lollops along, almost ambling from point A to point B. In saying that, press the loud pedal to the floor and she does shift, not rocket shift but it makes you smile. The paint is a blow over job, not terrible but owner neglect has allowed chips and scratches to form here and there. Plans? Change the worn out drivers seat, clean the life out of the interior, fix the handbrake, check the braking, sort out some better wheels for it and rebush the front suspension to stiffen it up a bit. Oh, sort out the noise emanating from the steering column ( bearings?) and fix the leccy windows too. I'm not unhappy with my purchase, not by a long way, but she does needs looking after.

Now that is a lovely looking old barge. So much presence for not a lot of money. Small gremlins aside, at least once they are sorted you will have a little piece of mind

Even with the niggles that car's cheap at a grand. If it's 80s and German I'll be into it, and having owned W124s and loved them I've always kept an eye on these. The chap I bought my 260E from sold it because he'd found a W126. It had taken him months to find one he was happy with. Good ones are few and far between, most were abused when prices bottomed out and wannabee gangsters and other general ne'er do wells bought them after seeing them in Scarface.
Good luck getting it sorted, it'll be a beauty once it's sorted.

Sell the number plate and get the correct 15 hole alloys! Great cars full stop. Oh, by the way it's been reported that the 4.2 is the sweetest of the V8 engine range. Hope you keep the thread up to date.

the 420 engines are super sweet for cruizing around, if you push them they can be quick (ish) but not warp speed. they are super smooth though.
when driving my 420 i allways had they idea the car was hesitating to accelerate as if it was asking, are you really sure you want to go that fast? and then went off..

lol.... air suspenaion and big wheels....only joking peeps...hold your fire!!!
I would stick some 17 inch amg monoblocks and a slight drop. Quick question, what is the diff between SE and SEL models? "L" is for long wheel base or is it for luxury? My uncle had a 500 SEL which had every conceivable electronic gismo( at the time) including a reclining rear seat(bench-like, not individual) which was heated. My cousin wrote it off after a good night out....needless to say he and the passenger where kept safe. Did these models come with crumple zones?

Thanks guys, proper mojo boosting!!!! Berendd, thats exactly how the acceleration is!!! You kick down and the car has a quick think and then says "ok, lets go....." very strange!! The 'L' denotes long wheelbase SEs, I mean, its not like the car isnt long enough as it is, is it! Ive found some 18in wheels, read around various threads on various Merc based forums and the consensus is that, for some, it hits the spot but not for others. Tyre choice on the 18s seem to be a factor too. Took her too work this morning, she is a fabulous old girl that really needs a bit of care and attention, something she will be getting. Ive got some history with the car, its still got its Portman Mercedes ( Manchester) sticker in the back window and looks to have spent the bulk of its life oop North. Just a pity some owners have treated it so shabbily. Ive never owned a car that has paper work denoting "sorn" so many times, the poor old girl has been laying idle longer than she has been on the road over the last few years. To be honest, handbrake apart, ive got to sort the wheels out, I bloody hate the ones on her.

That is really nice man! Niggles just give you something to fix at weekends, and isnt that why we rock old cars? As modern ones not breaking gets boring?!

You may know this but anyway the handbrake is a footlever left of the brake pedal , the pull on the dash is just the release, Ive seen a few people complain of lack of handbrake when its just an unusual setup.
