Just read pretty much this whole thread...
I started off thinking it would be a cool budget build, keep it looking "crappy" and make it quick.. It's like going down a rabbit hole with older cars sometimes- Oh I'll just sort this or make this look a bit nicer, but what about that now, or maybe I should do this because I've done that haha!
Then it started to take a different turn, I'm assuming because of all the hours you had spent on it you wanted it to truly reflect your work...And it has mate. Nice welding work, sweet install with some choice details and you've finished it off with a very respectable paint job that has scope to look even better but like you say- "how far do you go"? I think you've hit the sweet spot on it tbh mate and now it's got the basis for you to enjoy, add bits and maybe even build upon performance wise, although I bet she'll be a pretty quick NA tbh.
well it's definitely not a crappy Allegro, it's a mint looking Allagro that will hopefully stay with you for a long time.
Great work, great thread and a great car.

Thanks mate, that must have took some patience! yes to begin with I did consider painting it matt black with a rusty bonnet. The blue grew on me though and once I started fitting new parts I couldn't stop.
Never gone this far building a car before but hoping to start enjoying it soon although probably never be finished.

As well as the Austin Badge have you fitted the Altered model badge on the boot lid?

Haha not yet, I need to reglue the Allagro badge I made as it came appart. The other one on there is 1500 super. I could look for something vvc but I think the modern fonts are all nasty.

Yeah I'm looking at getting one printed now, fancy orange on black. Allegro Track Edition ? Might get VVC made up and stick over the 1500 bit. Also thought it would be funny to have an 1100 auto factory badge

Thanks, been putting the front door glass back in this afternoon.
I've spoken to the guy that owns the Vitara and while it's not my thing its certainly interesting. He also owned the beetle based one that he sold recently.

Not done a huge amount over Xmas but there isn't loads left to do really! Insurance bought and paid for, starts in a few weeks. Fitted the washer bottle and plumbed in the jets. Blue interior, ordered some padding for the cage. Started making some door cards in Ally

Awesome.
I do love an Allegro. I think if you strip away all the fog of bad reputation and their place in the general consciousness as "Britain's worst car", they're actually mighty fine looking cars. Kind of like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of British automotive. I've always liked them.

Glad I paid someone to do it! Hahah, yes. I was talking about this with my car buddy in the pub last night. Trying to fit curved windscreen glass on your own is, in my experience, a miserable and frustrating nightmare. I changed the windscreen on my Bedford CF2. It's a very wide windscreen with eccentric curves at each end, and the van's nose plus the height of the windscreen made it about two days of rage before it was in. !/2hour to remove the old one. An hour treating the area and prepping the windscreen rubber on the glass and laying in a pull tape... then almost two days of screaming in anger after constantly failing to get the damn thing in. Never again. =) Yours look great though. A nice fresh window rubber does wonders for an old car's general tidiness.

Yes it didn't look like a fun job, I'm glad I didn't attempt it. Breaking the front screen when I took it out put me off.
The fitter came recommended from a friend as they do a fair bit of classic work.
He brought the apprentice along to show him, as he said he will probably never get another Allegro to do again!
The rubbers are the original ones as new is only available off a reel, just cleaned and checked them. They sealed it both inside and out with lots of black stuff too.

Having screens in makes a car feel lots more finished too for some reason. Looks like they did a nice clean install for you.
