I don't think anyone has suggested a car has been stolen because it has been modded!
My gripe is that some unfortunate person may buy this car thinking it is a 71 car. He/she will do all the right things and enjoy driving the car, then one day for whatever reason the owner has to make an insurance claim. The insurance people and maybe a few other agencies come sniffing around the car and discover its not a 71 car but a 73/74/75 or 76 car. Honest owner loses car, gets paid zilch, police possibly get involved and if the car was involved in an accident poss problems for a third party and worst of all a MK3 goes to the crusher. So in answer to the does it matter questions, the answer is yes yes it does matter.
PS I have now seen an under-bonnet pic and it is not a 71/72 and probably not a 73 car.

Realistically we all know that's never gonna happen, what insurance company knows the ins and outs of all cortina model year changes well enough to prove 'beyond reasonable doubt' that someone has deliberately rung this car? Its hardly in the same league as one of those 'tax exempt' land rovers with a galv chassis, 300tdi engine and coil springs. And who knows what repairs and body panel swaps its had in its 40+ years on the planet anyway? Sorry but its just not credible to blatantly state 'this is a ringer' off the back of a few photos, you simply cannot say for certain and your justification for doing so is weak. You are just stirring up hassle as far as I can see.

No, I think in this case the term ringer is used because it looks a lot like a 1973 on facelift car with the identify of a 1971 car in order to obtain tax free status. Changing the engine capacity on the log book could make the dvla request a vehicle inspection. As the change to a larger capacity would normally mean a higher tax bracket it's unlikely the DVLA would do that. Moot point in this case as the car is currently tax exempt. Could easily have been re-shelled back in the 70s with a then brand new shell......
