See if a programming called end it all is available for your version of windows it kills all background tasks

Windows Operating system I take it?
Usually it'll be spy/bloatware that's bundled in, accidentally downloaded.
I use a Mac out of choice, but my 9-5 is spent advising and sometimes fixing computers, I found a combination of Microsoft Security Essentials and their own Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool work as well as any paid services for home users and they are designed to work in harmony.
Sometimes you'll find that the anti virus and anti spyware software will work against each other, check that you don't have anything else installed. Most computers will be loaded with free or trial software, remove what you don't need.
Good luck. Report back.

Have a look in task manager and see if there any programs hogging CPU and/or memory. You could also try CCleaner to clean up the registers.

Hi, As above, open up task manager (control alt delete / or right click task bar). If you can't see task bar you may have to press the 'windows' key on Win8 to get it to look more like Win7. Anyway, put task manager in order of high CPU (processor) or RAM (memory) use by clicking the appropriate column at the top and see which processes are at the top of the list and hammering the processor and memory. If you google the process names it'll tell you what they are and if you need them, or post back on here and someone will advise. EDIT: This might help show how task manager works on Win8: LinkIf there are dodgy processes running then Malware bytes free download is very good and easy to use to clean them up and sort your computer out. LinkAs also mentioned, I'd recommend just using the built in 'windows defender' anti virus and firewall bundled with Win8 as other products aren't necessary and will slow it down further. You can turn that on in control panel / security or something like that. I've not got a Win8 machine to hand today but can check at work tomorrow for the exact location if it helps. Hope that's not too I.T jargon-ey? I do this stuff all day at work so it's hard not to litter I.T related messages with jargon and abbreviations. Similar to car stuff really where it's all EGR / DPF / DMF / EFI etc... Hope that helps. Stu

By the way, forgot to add - the computer isn't getting unusually hot is it, or the fans running constantly? That sort of performance problem can also be related to overheating of the memory due to poor air circulation or a broken fan.

run MSCONFIG and create a selective startup to only include the essential microsoft services and see if it improves, i would recomend uninstalling any anti virus software and then run spybot. as mentioned above miscrosofts free tools provided are plenty enough with a bit of cautious browsing. ive always personally found anti virus software more a nuisance than a virus itself, and it constantly runs in background.
but sounds like your laptop has been well used and would probs benefit most from a reinstall. pain in the ass though.
also if your OS hard drive is over 50% full that can make you pc run alot slower.
