This one isn't technically mine... although I've been "given" it by my Dad.. bit of back story.. My Dad had a Forester that he was doing nothing with. My mates Rob and Jade wanted a Subaru for their horses, and my Dad wanted the space. Swapping for another car, meant he'd loose the space, and he wants the space, so didn't want another car.. but was loathed to scrap something that he saw as useful, not to him, but to someone! Jade and Rob wanted to get rid of the FTO, and my Dad asked if I wanted it.. I'm not one to turn down a free car, even if it's something I don't really have much interest in, but I had been looking at FTO's after getting rid of my Celica, as I fancied a "pretty" coupe that was less ruinous and didn't want to find myself in a Corrado or Scirocco.. I'm not massively bothered about the wrong wheel drive stigma, or the performance lack of the non MIVEC cars with the strangle-tronic, but I wouldn't mind something that's not as low as my BMW, that's comfortable, and that I can use to do distance in comfortably. (For those who only know me on here.. I've got an E36 Coupe that's been in the works since December too.. it's nice.. but it's not a "performance" car really). Car had a "running fault", when it's put into Drive (it's an auto with Tiptronic, like most of these are), it misfires, bogs and makes no power. Delivered Saturday night to mine, I was on my way out, so didn't get a chance to look, but he she is in daylight. JDM Rust Blister on arch (y0!) Giving the wide mouth frog look! The car arrived on a trailer at my house, because I had space for a car to sit, flat battery.. I took that out and charged it up. Don't ask what I'm doing with it, or plans, cos I don't have any, although it's on my insurance and MOT'd, and I'm currently still BMWless, (in for MOT today!), so we'll see how it plays out. Sarah seems to think it's a nice looking car.. I'm still undecided.. it sounds nice, but it feels cheap.. I struggle to "bond" with JDM stuff.. I think I expect less tinny and more padding, spoiled by a diet of Germanic tin. Anyway, Sunday rolled around, after a night of cards against humanity till 1:30am at a friends, I was a bit tired, so I slept in till 10ish, then watched some SOA.. When I could be bothered, I got out the house and grabbed some tools from the workshop. Took the fuel filter out some time Sunday, it was cold, and I had to lay across the engine and get my midget hands into the space between the inlet manifold and the bulkhead.. it wasn't as bad as doing a turbo on a 1.8T A3, but it was still awkward. Drained the fuel filter... DEELICOUS.. smelled like petrol, looked like something washed off the bottom of sump. Anyway, after changing that filter out, blowing the lines back, and bunging an old rare earth magnet from a dead computer HDD in the tank I've got most of the rust in the tank addressed, and with a charged battery all seems well.. car starts and drives as it should.. Technically, this is my Dads, but he's told me to have it, for getting the Forester out of his way.. nice of him.. and he's got an MX5 to restore.. so he's busy with that, and fixing his psdeudo fwd Jag.. I'm not sure what to do with it.. I'll change the rims out and get some use from it.

Great handling cars these, I find the biggest issue I have with liking them is most people can never get the offset of their wheels to flush with the arches on these and they do look ridiculous on stock rims That's pretty much my only dislike of these. Great cars though I would love a free one! Go take it down some nice windy roads and I'm sure you will at the very least, like it a little bit

I'm sure I will. I've looked at manual conversions, and the time/money involved mean it's not really worth pursing unless I really start to like the car. I'll have to get a decent tank of fuel through it and see how I get on with the autobox I guess

I to suffer your JDM stigma, Inever really form a bond with them. But as engineering excellence they are hard pushed to be beaten. Am currently at the helm of a Toyota Lucida that someone has bought that had been abused for many years, the oil is like tarmac, the fuel filter hasn't been changed in a decade and its been run on oil as a bonus. How the crazy Japanese worked on Japanese engines are beyond me there is just no space or anything. I love the look of the FTO and have fancied one for many years but there just not quick enough

How the crazy Japanese worked on Japanese engines are beyond me there is just no space or anything. I love the look of the FTO and have fancied one for many years but there just not quick enough When I get round to finishing it, there's an Impreza WRX powered 1303 beetle sat on my drive for going quick. I've fancied the idea of a nice sounding V6 auto for using as town/city and commuting work for a while and the FTO was on the radar, but fell off radar because I'd always want the manual MIVEC one.. but then if I had a manual MIVEC one, it'd not be a Celica GT4, and if I had the Celica GT4, I'd wonder why I've got the beetle.. and it goes round, and round... Then this one fell into my lap... made the decision for me really. Rude not to.. as they say. I'll give it a go, see how I get on.

I think they're a good looking car from directly infront or behind. Its the bit in the middle and long front overhang that I cant get on with.

Even if you've charged the battery, one that's starting to go/drop cells can cause all kinds of weird problems.
LS400's won't shift into reverse if the battery is dead/dying Kizashi CVT's develop shift problems akin to a dead auto R33 Skyline's get the HICAS light (and occasionally airbag light) coming on Apexi PowerFC's develop misfires.
If you can get yourself a new battery with decent CCA/AH, that might help sort some problems out. As well as doing the maintenance you've already started.

It's only fitted with an 054 as standard, they're practically a free battery with a Halfords trade card, so I might go and get one.

The damn thing is growing on my styling wise.. I've even started to warm to the wheels.. although they need to really be a darker colour I think.
I taxed it last night online using the DD jobbiemathing, I know Feb is a short month and I'm half way through, but I want to get some miles on it and decide what I want to do, and in the interest of keeping it all legal (and with my BMW still not MOT'd... teach me to leave cars in the hands of others to "sort out" for me!)
I'm gonna see if I can blag a decent sized Gerry Can on loan tonight, and get some fresh pez in there, take it for a drive and see what's what.

Dropped £20 of pez in this last night, went for a buzz round the block.
Unfortunately, the fuel filter didn't cure the misfire, I suspect I've either dropped some krud out of the tank by adding more fuel, or the pump is dead.
I'm going to check some of the more silly things on it tonight, check the state of the fuel filter sock again, and the condition of the pump.. I suspect it'll be a state.
A mate is breaking a JDM (y0!) car with an in pump tank that I'm going to rob from him later this evening and if I get time fit to the car, this might (or might not) cure an issue, it may be something else.
No ECU codes appear to be logging EML's at the moment, so I suspect it's a mechanical, rather than sensor/electrical fault.

I've seen alternator issues with em before, they caused all manner of odd electrical issues as well.

There's a trick to it. Take it out from underneath, and take the front strut off, move the driveshaft and hub forward, drop the engine mount off and raise the engine on a jack about 30-50mm, the sort of twists out fairly easily then.

Oh yeah.. progress update. That's why I was looking at the thread. Right, so I went over to my mate Matt's last night, and I relieved him of a fuel pump from a Starlet he's breaking up, as the in tank ones are all much of a muchness with this age of JDM (y0!)car (save the mounting setup and flow pipe bracket). Also grabbed the battery, as I like to have spares kicking around, and it was free. I'll probably get these fitted at the weekend, if I don't get caught up on Sarah's bike

I had a FTO mivec for six years and in that time I had to replace the alternater twice. Thay can make the motor do all sorts of strange things when thay start to go.

When removing the fuel pump.. I had to go under the car due to a stupid moulded rubber hose that twists when you refit. Gave me a chance to check the underside for grot. It's pretty good under there Oh the fuel pump seems to work now. Car is running a fair bit better. Gearbox is interesting....
