I used to be with the RAC until the day my beloved Alfa 146 Ti got twonked up the backside by an 8 wheel 38 ton tipper truck full of rubble, turning it into a 145. I was near work so limped there and called it in for recovery.
When Id done my 8 hours, then waited a bit and still no breakdown truck, I bungeed the boot down and the back door shut and limped the 35 miles home in a very bent up and wonky Alfa. I joined the AA next day and they have been great on all my many, many call outs, even the dead TR7 south of Paris. Car recovered to a garage and sent home, and a rental Megane waiting all in 2 hours.
Useful side note, the anti burst stuff works to keep doors closed, but you wont get the shut again if you pull them open!

Thanks for the words of encouragement about the RAC guys, i appreciate that, i don't think i'll get anywhere, but i'll battle on! An awesome thread, a good inspiration. Although I'm afraid I can't help but question the "retro" status of some of them. Still love the idea though. In terms of your mate still not buying a retro car, I can only see one person missing out there!! Keep up the good work Thanks. I understand what you're saying fella about some of the cars not being particularly "retro" and that's fair enough, but they've all been over ten years old (i think), and they've all been cars that i consider to be especially interesting, or cool, whether or not they be considerd interesting, cool, or indeed retro to others. The thing is, there are a lot of cars out there that are interesting, but havn't yet got into that cool retro vibe, therefore, as they are not particularly cool or retro, the prices are low because of lack of interest. So i was trying to buy them, drive them, and experience them before anyone else cottoned onto them and the prices got higher! Does that make sense? Or am i babbling like an idiot as usual? Anyway, i'm glad you're enjoying the thread, retro or not lol. As for my mate, yep, you're right, he is the only one missing out. But some people prefer the dream, because the dream is perfect, the dream never goes wrong, the dream is safe. 20 odd years ago i worked with a couple of fellas who dreamed of having something special, one dreamed of owning a Mercedes 190E, and one dreamed of owning a Jaguar XJ6, neither of them ever owned one, and to this day they still have not owned them. They've looked at countless models but theres always been something wrong with them, wrong colour, wrong interior, wrong wheels, so on and so fourth! Why? Because the dream is perfect, they didn't really want one, they just wanted the dream of owning one, the fairy tale. I remember one day talking with them in the tea hut, they were talking about buying their Mercedes, and Jaguars, and were pointing at various models and jotting down numbers of cars for sale in the Auto Trader that they were going to look at, and to be fair they always followed this up by going and looking at cars, they must've looked at millions over the years but none were ever right for them. Anyway, as they were talking about these cars they were going to 'buy' i piped up that i was going to get myself a Ford Mustang! This was then followed by a lot of scoffing and laughing at me by these two, but then... I got one, then another, and another , then another, and so on until i'd had, and sold five or six, and they were still looking through magazines for their perfect Mercedes and Jaguar!! And no doubt they still are looking! Like i say, the dream is perfect, it never goes wrong, it never breaks down, and it never costs you any money... Far, FAR easier, but for me, you, and everyone else that owns a car that they consider to be cool, the dream is not as much fun is it? Good lord look at the time!! I should've had the old thing up for sale ages ago, so here's the link:- www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151862102802?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITAll the fun i've been having wafting about in this thing i just keep putting the sale of it to the back of my mind... It's gotta go though, it's just gotta... Unless... Unless i can find somewhere to keep yet another car!! Anyway, here's some pretty pictures i took of it today! I hope you appreciate them i got told off by an elderly gentleman while i was taking them! He said i was on private land and had no right to be there taking photos of any kind lol. I really do believe that this is one of the prettiest coupés i've ever owned. I keep thinking to myself, if i sell it, will i ever be able to get myself another one? However in order to move on, i need to set it free! Plus, i had the same feeling when i sold the last one i had, and obviously i did manage to get another one after that, this one lol! So hopefully if and when the need rears its ugly head again, i'll still be able to get one... Hopefully! So, should you fancy a big wafty 5 litre V8 Mercedes coupé, and have just £2000 burning a hole in your pocket, please do let me know!!

Two slight criticisms of the advert, A; I would of used the pics you posted in your above post on the ebay add rather than the supermarket car park ones, looks far more classy. And B; I think you have focused to much on the negatives of the car. By all means mention its problems but don't dwell on them, focus on the positives.

I know what you guys are saying about under selling the car, and i think that now i've re-read my ad i probably am, but of course now it's got a bidder or two i can't change it, and i can't even change the photos, so whatever happens i'm stuck with the ad i've got. Perhaps i've only half-arsed advertised it because in the back of my mind, i'd like to keep it. I've just been out for a drive in it, and the drive is lovely. I question myself every time i drive this, and i wonder where i can store it, and if it sells, which as it now has bidders it will, will i ever be able to get myself another should the need arise again? Of course, watching the Electric Federal films on youtube doesn't help things either lol:- It's funny, all the other cars i've had this year, once i've had the V5c documents i've put a 'FOR SALE' sign in the windows, but not this one, i keep thinking i should, but just can't bring myself to do it! As for using the nicer pictures rather than the supermarket car park set, there is a reason for this. The reason is that in the past when i've owned cars i always photograph the car that i owned for my own records. I always try to make a bit of an effort with my photography (such as it is) as i want to have a photo of the car that i'm happy to stick on the wall, and i used to use those photos in my ad, and here was the turning point:- I put lots of pictures up of this Firebird that i took. I seemed to have a lot of interest, but no bidders. I only wanted £5000 for the car, and thats what i started the auction at, but i got nothing, just lots of watchers. Then i got maybe half a dozen or so emails asking the same question, Do you have any photos of the actual car you're selling? I said, yes, this is the actual car i'm selling. Then one person said, do you have any current photos of it? I said, yes, these were taken the day of the listing. But still no bidders, and it ended without bidders. So i asked my car dealer mate what the problem was, and he said simply, your photos are too good, no one will believe that this is the car you're selling. So then i dug out the photos i'd taken of it down at the docks when i brought it into the country:- Re-listed it changing nothing about the ad apart from the photos, same start price and everything. Once again i got loads of watchers, loads of questions but this time... Bidders... Loads of them!! I was astounded, i thought that the first set of pics would've drawn the bidders in, but it would appear that it kept them away, presumably because they thought they were not bidding on the car in the photos! My mate also reckons that if you make the ad and photos too good, people start to wonder what you're trying to hide. I'm not trying to hide anything, and what i don't want is someone turning up to buy the Mercedes, or any car for that matter, then getting all dissappointed because they think i've made the car out to be better than it is. I'd rather make it out to be worse than it is, and then hopefully the new owner won't be dissappointed. I know i wasn't when i drove it home, and i'm still not dissappointed whenever i drive it now... I've even started to drive to work, and i only work about half a mile from home. It takes me longer to drive to work than it does to walk there, once you take into account starting the car and letting it warm up, choosing a CD, and then doing two or three laps of the town before heading off to work!!

Strange how it works out. If I'd seen the ad for the trans am the first time, I would of had it instantly, regardless of pics. Yet, I always wonder where I'm going wrong with my ads aswell, as you said, loads of watchers on my Cougar but no bids either

Nice one pistonpopper. I had a similar experience recently. When selling a car previously I take a huge amount of photos (some artsy) / write a huge amount of info / record a video so that everything is covered. I never get the amount of money the car is worth.
Recently I though I would change tact. I took some very basic pictures / wrote a few vague sentences / no video. Its the first time ive ever made money on a car! £600!

Makes perfect sense, and to be fair I think some of them were/are cool! Think I missed the point a little, so my apologies for that. Maybe at the end of the each year ( I'm hoping you'll continue this for much more than a year ) you could do a brief summary of the cars, a list with photos a brief description and how much money you made or lost on the car? Just a thought. Again, keep up the good work, looking forward to next one - when will it be revealed?

I really do believe that this is one of the prettiest coupés i've ever owned. Handsome - granted - Pretty! ...only in the same sense of the word as a Former East German Olympic Shot-Putter may be classified as such. This thread needs an Alfa...

Only good as doorstops, you could leave one parked with the engine running and still no self respecting thief would go anywhere near it

Oh please, mobile Italian scrapyards. Only good as doorstops, you could leave one parked with the engine running and still no self respecting thief would go anywhere near it Youre entitled to your opinion and that's fine, but I beg to differ. I picked up my 156 for £600 with 218,000 miles on the clock, original engine and gearbox. I put 37,000 miles on it in a year, never skipped a beat. Didn't break down, only things that needed replacing were tyres, brakes and wheel bearings. As far as I know, the petrol ones are a bit of a reliability nightmare, but the diesel ones seem fine.

I not only agree with the alfa stereotype because I have experience of it. Bought a 3 litre 166, within 2 months of owning it, lost all brakes on the school run when the seals went on the master cylinder. Due to alfa fitting there 3 litre engines with a water pump that has a plastic impeller which cracks in the normal heat produced and stops spinning, something that they are aware of but don't do anything about. It overheated, so I changed the pump for one with a metal impeller, which meant the timing belt had to be done because the water pump sits behind the belt and one can't be removed without the other. The a calliper seized causing 4 of the 5 bolts on the wheel to heat up and shear off ( nearly lost the wheel with that one ) fixed / replaced everything with genuine alfa parts, sold it.
Never again

who is your part time traders policy with? I went with the Insurance Factory in the end. If you do decide to follow a similar path, please do document it like this, as i reckon thats part of the fun! I would quite like to try and do it again, but in all honesty i can't really afford to. I can tell you that i havn't made a profit on a single car yet, and my feeling at this point in time is that i won't! I got close with the Street Ka, but when you take into account ebay fees then it was a little loss. I havn't added it all up yet, but i'm guessing that i'm about £1000 down from where i started at the beginning of the year, so realistically unless i get some sort of a miracle and the bidding goes wild on the Mercedes and i make a HUGE profit then i'm not really going to be able to afford to have another go unfortunately. Currently with just eight days to go on the Mercedes i'm £1000 out of pocket on that too, i'm hoping that things will pick up towards the end of the week, but i guess we'll have to see... Keep everything crossed! Handsome - granted - Pretty! ...only in the same sense of the word as a Former East German Olympic Shot-Putter may be classified as such. I think it's a case of beauty being in the eye of the beer holder. I can't talk about East German shot-putters, but when you look at the 29 year old Current German shot-putter champion, Christina Schwanitz:- Who would be able to resist her if she asked you to take her to bed? Not me thats for sure, i would be right there... Mainly because she would probably just pick me up over her shoulder and take me away kicking a screaming while my mates looked on laughing and pointing at me as i'm dragged back to her cave!! But i digress... Besides i didn't say it was the prettiest coupé i'd ever owned, i said it was one of the prettiest coupés i'd ever owned... Moving on... This thread needs an Alfa... I wholeheartedly agree, 100% more Alfa content needed. I agree with the previous, Alfa needed! I remember reading Popper that they were on your want list? A 164 would be magnificent or maybe a 166? Agreed, and i had hoped to have had one in the list, but the list of Alfas that i like is pretty short:- From the Alfa list, i quite fancy an SZ!! But one hasn't come along this year... YET! Apart from that, a Spyder, a GTV, maybe a Sportwagen, but the one that has eluded me for years is a 164, i really would like one of those, but it needs to be fully functioning, and ready to go. Oh, and not rusty either if thats possible! The one that i really want (apart from the SZ) is the 164, the others would just be like the 'B' sides to me, i've looked at a couple of 166's, and to be fair if one came up that was pretty much a gift i'd have it, but for me, they're not quite as nice as a 164, and i would feel like i'd just gone for second best, even though, in reality they're probably far better. I have bid on a couple of Alfas throughout the year, but because i'm not that into the particular models that i've been bidding on (Spyders, GTVs, Sportwagens, and 166s) I've not put big bids in. But you never know, a cheap one might turn up and i'll jump on it if its any good! Anyway, as there's not been much (well anything) really in the way of Alfa Romeos, here's a photo of one that i was very interested in that i took earlier in the year:- Abandonned and unloved for a couple of years, but it looked solid enough. I left messages asking if it was for sale, and what it needs doing to it, but no one ever got back to me, so it still sits there, waiting for Mother Nature to reclaim it

Alfa requirement satisfied - 164 excellent choice. If you get the chance to have one for a short period - 145 Cloverleaf. WRT Christina and the Merc - I think the comparison is validated - Topped with Gold and a sprint round the block with either is likely to leave you quite breathless. Handsome

Glad that the Alfa requirement has been satisfied. To be fair i do have an Alfa Romeo 164 in my watchlist on ebay right now... But it's in Australia, and i don't know anything about shipping a car from Australia, or any shipping companies that offer that service. If anyone knows of such a service, and have experience of shipping a car from Australia, please do feel free to let me know! So, it's Saturday, and Saturday means time for the weekly shop! So off we go on the 22.7 twisty country road type miles to ASDA!! Oh yeah, check me out!! Mrs Pistonpopper informed me that she was driving, and i was relelgated to the passenger seat! Actually it's not a bad place to be, although it has to be said that Mrs Pistonpoppers shoes are obviously heavier than mine, and therefore the ride along the country roads sort of looks like a green blur! But pretty soon we were parking at ASDA. I don't know about you fellas, but i don't like anyone elses car to come near to my car when i park it up, i like to park far away from the madding crowd in order to avoid other people banging their doors into my car, as apparently this is acceptable to do when you're either getting out of, or getting ito your car in a car park! Infact, i don't even want other peoples cars exhaust to touch my car. So, whenever i park at a car park we park far, FAR away from the other people. Mrs Pistonpopper likes this, as it gives her a nice little walk across the car park, and it makes her very happy... NOT!! Once inside ASDA Mrs Pistonpopper busied herself racing around the store getting all manner of groceries et cetera, and I acted like a man and phaffed around looking at tools, buying a new air freshener for the new car, bought a load of HotWheels cars for the Pistonpoppets, bought the new Elvis CD, bought a DVD box set, bought a load of sweets (not candy because we're not Americans) for tonight, then stole a carrier bag to put it all into after i paid for it! Ooh, get me, a super villain!! The DVD i decided to buy was season 1 of the TV classic Bewitched. I bought this for several reasons, because i remember liking it when i was a kid, i thought my kids would enjoy it, and because i think that Elizabeth Montgomery is probably the finest looking woman ever to walk the Earth... (Umm, well, except for Mrs Pistonpopper, she much better obviously!) Anyway I figured that as it was Hallowe'en, and we don't let the Pistonpoppets go Trick or Treating because (A) I'm a very mean Daddy (and apparently Mrs Pistonpopper's a very mean Mummy) (B) I don't know or trust anyone in my street (C) its begging, and i don't believe that anyone wants their evening interrupted by strange children they don't know banging on their door, and (4) it's an American tradition, and as we're not Americans, and don't live in Americaland we don't do it. Having said that we do decorate the house a bit for the kids, and usually we do have a party, but as the girls have been Rat-bags this half term they've fluffed it, so no party. See, i am a mean Daddy! Anyway, pretty soon we were back at the Merc loading the goodies into the boot, and the baddies into the back seat. I decided that i was going to put my New Elvis CD on, only to be outvoted by the rest of my family who wanted to listen to Deep Purple instead! Pretty soon we were all rocking out to Smoke On The Water! I think i've probably turned my kids into social outcasts in the playground. I can just see their friends going, hey have you heard the new Taylor Swift album? And my kids going, no, have you heard Led Zepplin? It's funny, one of their friends was wearing a Nirvana T-shirt, so i said to them, you like Nirvana huh? And they said, Who's Nirvana?.. DOH!! Having said that, my eldest goes to Rock School, so atleast she's mixing with others who know who the likes of Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, and Nirvana are (even if it is just the tutors)... Hopefully! But back to the car! I drove home because it's my car and i like driving it lol! On the way home it has become customary to do a lap of town. This is because ever since my youngest daughter could talk whenever we were out in the car she always wants to do a lap of town on the way home. It doesn't matter where we've driven from either, if we drove 200 yards to the shop, lap of town. When we drove back from Germany, lap of town, distance means nothing to her, she wants that lap of town! So, in the traffic on our lap of town i pull up next to a very nice blaaaaack BMW 635csi. I glance over to see that it was being driven by a fairly attractive woman who i would guess to be in her mid forties, who upon seeing me looking waves at me. I'm presuming that this was because she noticed that i too was in a mid eighties German coupé, so i politely wave back. This would've been fine, but then i turned to Mrs Pistonpopper and said, "A pretty woman in a BMW 635 just waved at me, quick duck down and pretend you're not here!" Not only did Mrs Pistonpopper not duck down, but she decided to give me a dead arm instead! Some people have no sense of humour lol! Anyway soon we were back home where unfortunately i was unable to assist bring in the shopping as my arm still hurt lol. Pretty soon we were settled infront of Stevie the TV to watch Bewitched, while eating the best part of a months recommended allowance of sugar in one go... See what i mean about Elizabeth Montgomery? Strewth, why don't they make women like that anymore? The good news is that after watching one of the four DVDs in the set, all thoughts of being dragged off to a cave by German shot-putter champion Christina Schwanitz had evaporated... Phew!! I was then sitting around thinking, what to do now, what to do... ONE MORE DRIVE BEFORE I SORN IT, YEAH!! I grabbed the keys and headed out to the Mercedes, ok, where shall i go, where... Quick, make a decision! I know, i'll just do the same drive as i did earlier, but this time it'll be different, this time it'll be dark, and the roads will be quiet! So out on the wiley, windy moors we'd roll and fall in green... No, it wasn't green, there are no street lights on the country roads... Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely, on the other side from you... Hmm, it was dark, and lonely on the country roads, and with the fog rolling it it was kinda freaking me out a little, it's Hallowe'en and i'm spOOked... Where's that Elvis CD!! Now, i don't know about you, but i was brought up on a steady diet of Elvis records, and Films. My Mum was a big fan, i've heard them all, seen them all, i've even been to Elvis' house... TWICE. But unfortunately he was dead at the time, so i never met him... I can actually remember where i was, and what i was doing when i heard that he had died, and i was only eight at the time! However, i was not a big fan of Elvis at the time, but as time has gone on, i have appreciated him more and more, which i why i bought the CD. So, this new CD (bear with me, i know i've gone way off topic but normal service will be resumed as soon as possible) called "If I Can Dream" is a reworking of 14 of Elvis' songs where they have removed the original instruments (presumably by witchcraft) and replaced them with Royal Phil and his Harmonica. (the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for those of you who are either not old enough, or have forgotton the eighties Fosters ad featuring Paul Hogan!) For the most part this album is pretty good, except for track number 4. Track number 4 is Fever. Fever, written by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell has been covered by numerous artists from various musical genres, most notably by Peggy Lee whose rendition is my favourite, which also became the most widely known version of Fever and the singer's signature song. Although it has to be said that the original Elvis version was quite good too, a good second if you like. So, why do i not like this version on this album? Simple, some foolish person decided it would be better if they made it a duet with Michael Bublé!! Michael freakin' Bublé... Are you kidding me? RUINED IT!!! Dear oh dear oh dear! Anyway, by the end of the album i had almost got over the shock of Elvis duetting with Michael Bublé! By now it was starting to get late and i new i needed to head for home if i was going to SORN it. For those of you outside the UK, SORN or Statutory Off Road Notification is done in order to claim my Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) back, if you don’t use or keep your vehicle on a public road, eg you keep it in a garage, on a drive or on private land. As the tax is no longer transferable between owners i tend to SORN the car at the end of the month in order to avoid paying for a whole months tax when the car will be in someone elses name (hopefully) by a coulpe of days into the following month. Does this make sense, i'm never much good at explaining stuff like this... Personally i think it's all a big rip off! Moving on... Pulling up outside Pistonpopper Towers it appeared to look as if everything was normal... Well, as normal as it can be at Pistonpopper Towers! As i sat their listening to Elvis telling me Wise men say only fools rush in but I can't help falling in love with you... I thought to myself, yep, sadly i have fallen in love With the big Merc... Does it really have to go, should i SORN it, should i take it off ebay, it's not like it's making enough money to even break even yet! No, it must go, i can't keep them all, i've no room, and i don't have the time to drive and enjoy them all, the last time i drove my Talbot was to the MOT station and back early in September, and i can't even remember the last time my Mustang went for a spin! Sadly it must go, hopefully i'll not make a loss, i'd really like to atleast break even on this one, but a profit would be fabulous... Just four days time, and we'll know the outcome...
