Hi mate loving the progress so far. I would like to try the same/similar in the future. Where did you get your insurance from in the end? Any tips for the right policy? Do you buy the cars as a trader or a legitimate owner of the V5 each time? Cheers Rob

I like the concept of this thread but think I've probably managed to buy a car a month this year that would be considered a retro ride compared to the likes of the 2003 Ford Ka etc... Go on then, get a thread up. I'll have a read

Not all of them managed to get on the road either, The fso 125p pickup is still unfinished as is the Lada Riva 1200 which is an ongoing project. Just about everything I've had has qualified for a classic policy.

Hi mate loving the progress so far. I would like to try the same/similar in the future. Where did you get your insurance from in the end? Any tips for the right policy? Do you buy the cars as a trader or a legitimate owner of the V5 each time? I went for a part time traders policy, told them that i was hoping to do a bit of part time trading, which i am, and that it is not my full time job. They said that to qualify for a part time traders policy i must sell atleast eight cars in a year, which is hopefully acheiveable. It cost just under £900 a year, and for that i get fully comprehensive cover, and i've also added other things like European cover etc, although, once i'm outside the British Isles, my cover is limited to third party only. I wanted to be able to put my name on the V5c every time, so that i am the legitimate owner of the car, although this has proved to be a bit of a pain in the bum once or twice where i'm waiting for the V5c to arrive so that i can sell the car at the end of the month. Having said that, when i've been waiting for the V5c to arrive for the most part it hasn't arrived due to the previous owner of the car not sending it to the DVLA, rather than some kind of hold up at the DVLA. Ever since the Jag documents fiasco i have asked all the other previous owners if i can mail the documents off myself, and usually arrive with an envelope already written out, and stamped ready to send. We fill out the documents, sign them, then i seal it in the envelope infront of them, and put it in the first post box i see. I usually get the documents back in under a fortnight. I got my policy here:- www.insurancefactory.co.uk/I've never seen a set of sharkteeth so out of place on a car, like these... Fwiw, I hate there sharks teeth. I reckon it'd look way better completely standard, but then I am a curmudgeonly old b*gger. Love it, I think it either needs lowering or to loose the teeth personally, but thats just me. Defo loose the teeth at sale time So, some controversy surrounding the Sharks Teeth lol. I will admit that i think the Sharks teeth look better here... I did toy with the idea of keeping it stock, but when the Pistonpoppetts saw it they loved it, so they're gonna stay, atleast until the next owner of the AX has it. But it's just a big vinyl sticker, so should the next owner want to go back to stock, then it will be no dramas! I think that it is a bit of a love/hate thing, and i quite like it with the teeth, it gives it character, although it's comedy character, but it's a fun project, and this is a fun car. It's funny, at one point i did think about having Sharks teeth on the old Talbot, but i thought that it would be too much, and i didn't think it would work well with the beigeness of the Talbots body, but for me, it works on the AX, although i'm not sure about the eyes... Too far forward? I like the concept of this thread but think I've probably managed to buy a car a month this year that would be considered a retro ride compared to the likes of the 2003 Ford Ka etc... Go on then, get a thread up. I'll have a read retrorides.proboards.com/thread/173463/foads-blog-proton-sprint-pandaI started that thread around December 2014 and have had 17 cars since then with only two of them not being particularly retro - A Proton Jumbuck and a Tata Loadbeta... Not all of them managed to get on the road either, The fso 125p pickup is still unfinished as is the Lada Riva 1200 which is an ongoing project. Just about everything I've had has qualified for a classic policy. To be honest FOAD your thread, and the thread posted by xbo11ox were part of the inspiration for writing this thread. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the thread that xbo11ox wrote, and frankly astounded by the herculean effort that you were putting into that little FSO pick up, and i was willing you on to complete it. It looked way too far gone to me, and i was amazed anyone would even consider taking it on. Are you still working on it, or was it, as it looked to me at the time just far too bad, if you are still working on it, and you finish it and get it back on the road, then frankly you are worthy of HERO status! Incidentally, i love the Tata, i've had four of them, they're great... That yellow one ended up with a V8 in it... It was pretty good then lol! I understand what you're saying FOAD when you say that you like the concept of this thread, and that you've probably managed to buy a car a month this year that would be considered a retro ride compared to the likes of the 2003 Ford Ka etc... But i never said that i would necessarily buy a retro ride, what i said was:- I suggested we have a little bet, and that would be that i would buy, drive, experience, and then sell one car a month for a year. Each of these cars should be less than £1000, although if something comes up that i consider to be especially cool or interesting, then i can spend more! If i manage it, and do manage to get through 12 cars in a year, then he was to stop being a whiney-ass, and go out and buy something interesting to drive, and stop complaining that he can't afford a cool retro or classic car! The cars i choose whatever they may be must be MOTd, and in running order, and not a project, although being tatty is ok, as long as it's got an MOT, and is ready to drive! I didn't want to just go out and buy whatever, i wanted to buy cars that i considered to be interesting to me, and the Ka, is interesting, and i believe that they will pretty much all dissolve, therefore in the future when people are talking about cars they wish they'd owned i shall be able to say, yep, i had one of those. Think about it like buying a classic car before it reaches classic status, and cost classic money, i'm future proofing myself! Having said all that, obviously there are certain Retro Rides that i am on the lookout for, mk1 Vauxhall Carlton estate, Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Strada, Talbot Tagora, mk1 Renault Espace, to name but a few, but they've just not turned up yet. I must admit that i've even been looking for a Proton Aerodeck like yours (id love to see a photo of it side on so i can see how it looks with those Slotmag wheels!) But nothing has turned up yet. Also, for the most part, when they do turn up they're always so far away, and nine times out of ten i just don't have the time, or inclination to travel a long way to collect a car, so as a rule i tend to look within a 100 mile radius which cuts down my options a bit. I know that this is a lame excuse, but with the kids, and work etc, time is precious, and frankly i would rather spend time with my children, than be driving from one end of the country to another to buy a car, especially when i can find interesting rides withing a 100 mile radius even if they're not particularly retro. Speaking of which, what do you consider retro? Where does retro begin, and when does a retro car go from becoming retro, and move into classic status? For example here are three of the Mustangs i have owned, starting from the left we have my daily, a 2005, then a 1988, and lastly a 1966. Which is retro? In my opinion, the 2005 being ten years old should surely qualify as retro, especially as it's styling is very retro, but presumably, by your standards, not so? So then we've got the 1988, is this retro? At 27 years old this must be bordering on classic status, if indeed it isn't already regarded as such. Lastly we've got the 1966 which at 49 year old must be a classic, but is it retro too? In my opinion i think that retro is a state of mind more than anything else, and i know i've mentioned this before, but the word retro derives from the Latin prefix retro, meaning in past times, or backwards, and it could be used in reference to objects, like cars etc from the recent past that no longer seem to be what would currently consider to be modern. Therefore (and again, this is just my opion) pretty much anything that could be considered to be 'old tech' is retro, and as car design moves fairly quickly perhaps retro could be anything that is as new as a ten year old car, or maybe even newer than that? I think the term retro car doesn't really have a clear definition in relation to the age of the vehicle, unlike the term classic car which seems to be a term generally referred to as a vehicle of at least 25 years old. However some people define a car 15-25 years old as a 'modern classic' which is perhaps just another term for retro car? Thoughts?

I don't believe you can drive the car full time using the yellow part of V5. You would need to use Trade plates all the time.

don't understand why you don t use the yellow part of the v5,you have trade insurance and it keeps the number of owners down on the v5 As RobMorris pointed out I don't believe you can drive the car full time using the yellow part of V5c/3, i have an idea that you can only drive the car during business hours (whatever they are). Although i'm not sure that you would need to use Trade plates all the time on the yellow bit of the V5c. As i remember getting hold of trade plates is a real pain in the buttocks, and there are loads of rules and regulations about how they can be used including things like speed, as i remember from a long time ago when i worked breifly for a garage and regularly drove on trade plates (I was the parts chaser, nothing skilled like a mechanic!) when you were driving a vehicle on trade plates you weren't allowed to exceed 50mph! Plus, in my opinion i don't feel that i've really owned a car if i didn't get my name on the V5c. By the way RobMorris if you do decide to give this a go, i wish you all the very best with it mate, but please document it like i'm doing so that we can all have a read. I reckon it would be interesting to compare the tales of your experience.

Christ - let's not do that in this thread - it a crappy recipe for a thread that goes round a round in circles and ends up in the whinge bin because people have fixed views and it then becomes an ugly argument on the internet and no-one wins FOAD - I followed your thread too - I don't think the OP intended this thread to be Retro or even a curse word contest.....

This is true, i've seen a couple of threads over the years where the debate gets a little out of hand, and deviates from the original point of the thread, this is not where i want to go. FOAD, i'm reading your thread also, and have been for some time, it's good, and I'm enjoying your approach to motoring. I reckon we're both hitting it from different angles, and this is good, it all adds to the variety on this forum. Like it! I used to have an AX GTi, they are very fun cars, so light and flimsy they feel fast I've got a mate with an AX that runs a std lump but with 100 shot of Gas - Run's 13's!! I must admit that i think that with a bit of tweaking i reckon this could be quite a smart, and cabable little pocket rocket. Being that we are now over halfway through the month it's already time to think about selling this little thing, so, here's the link to my ad on fleabay:- www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151748770440?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649 this cool little French classic needs a new home so bid people, bid, bid, BID!!Seeing that we are past the halfway point of the month i figured that it was about time to put a few pretty pictures of it up, these i took today, and to be honest they're not as good as i'd hoped, i'd hoped to have found an old hanger to have in the background, but no such luck, so i'm just going for some photos of it in a field, not very imaginative i know but there you go... I decided (in my wisdom or otherwise) to leave the sharks teeth on as i feel that this might be the thing that draws people in to have a better look at the ad, although i do say in my ad that teh teeth are just a big decal, which can be easily removed if you would prefer a more standard look.... This may yet prove to be my undoing, as at the moment i really don't have a lot of watchers, and as it's currently at just £104 with 7 days and 20 hours left to go, i am hoping that bidding will pick up at the end, as the price is currently quite a long way from where i would like it to be. I guess i'll have to just cross my fingers, and wait and see! One thing that did strike me when i was writing my ad was just how solid this little Ax is, there really is no rust to speak of, and it would appear to have never even been welded. I reckon its a good little car, and has obviously been looked after during it's life, although at 22 years old it does have the odd dent and scratch, which i guess is only to be expected. But having said that it doesn't detract too much from what a nice little car this is, if you were pretty handy with bodywork i think you could have this looking concourse in no time at all. A half decent set of wheels and a good whack with the lowering stick and you'd have a very cool looking car on your hands fpr very little financial outlay, or effort.

Last night i was sitting at home, bored beyond belief and after reading up on this little thread, and following on from the words of wisdom written by si2001:- That's great, my first car was a Citroen AX, it was the pre-facelift and was an 11TGE. It was great fun, so light! I got the urge to take this little beauty out for a bit of a blast... well, I thought i'd give it a bit of a run anyway! Although it is not as good to drive as the Street Ka was, it's still quite good fun, probably due in no small part to just how light this little thing is. I really do believe that if you were feeling keen you could make something quite special from this little Citroën especially if you happened to have a Citroën Saxo VTS, or Peugeot 106 GTi with a damaged body but a good engine laying around. From what i understand mechanically they should be very similar as the engines were from the PSA TU engine series that was originally introduced in 1986 in the Citroën AX and continued to be used in the Citroën Saxo, and Peugeot 106 and various other Citroën and Peugeots right up until production finally ended in 2014. So with a little ingenuity, and plenty of elbow grease, you could have a nice little sleeper on your hands, although for full sleeper effect you might want to remove the sharks teeth! Having said all that, i am not so inclined, partly because this is not the point of the experience, and partly because i don't have the time, or talent, and neither do i happen to have such objects as a good engine from a hot Citroën or Peugeot in my collection of curse word (at the moment!) to build such a weapon. So, I'll just drive it, and enjoy it as it is in almost completely stock configuration, i'm happy with that. As it was a pleasant evening, i decided that i would go out, and just drive about, i drove aimlessly about for half an hour or more before deciding that i would head to the coast, y'know, just for a change like! This time though i elected for a bit of motorway cruising for a change. Taking my little city car out onto the motorway makes me feel a bit uneasy, even though i didn't really stray from the slow lane because i must admit that i don't really feel comfortable in such a small light car, I know that you see city cars out on the motorway all the time, but really they were designed for cutting through the city streets like a hot knife through a leper, rather than blasting along a big open motorway type road. At one point on my motorway journey i was tailgated by a fella in a Range Rover who for some reason or another didn't want to overtake me as he had ample opportunities, but he just wanted to sit on my rear bumper instead. He must've been damn close as all i could see in my rear view mirror was the grille and "ANGE ROVE" I couldn't understand why he was so close, and still don't. I will admit that i was only doing 60mph, but the motorway was fairly quiet, and so he could've easily pulled out to pass me if i wasn't going fast enough, but he didn't. Eventually when he turned off down the slip road he hammered past me, leaving me in his wake of V8 howl and exhaust fumes. I looked over at him fully expecting to see an irrate man giving me some sort of abuse, but he didn't even seem angry at all, there was no hand gestures or anything, he didn't even look at me. I think he was just travelling in a world of his own, completely oblivious to what was going on around him. Strange that he didn't feel the need to pass me in the five or so miles before he took his exit. I'm guessing that this is just his driving style. Now then, I wouldn't say that the Ax is an uncomfortable car, it's just that for the most part the cars i chose to drive are often on the larger size, and to be fair even going from my Talbot Alpine to the Ax is a bit of a culture shock as the Talbot is just that much bigger and for a fat bloke, the more room you have the better! Another thing i noticed when driving along the motorway in the Ax is the road noise from the wheels (you don't hear the road noise in the alpine, just the roar of the exhaust! I'm still questioning my sanity about my decision to sell the Talbot too!!). The engine is relatively quiet in the Ax, and it whirrs happily away under the bonnet, but the road noise from the tyres is very audable. Although, i don't notice it when mrs Pistonpopper, and the Pistonpoppetts are in the car, probably due to the chatter, and the fights over what CD is being played. On my own though I found that I focussed on the road noise for a while, before realising that i didn't have the radio on either, and this was probably why i was focussing on the road noise, before this i'd not really noticed it, my mind being previously occupied counting the dead flys on the grille of the tail-gating "ANGE ROVE"!! Pretty soon i was listening to the soothing distinctive... Wailing cry from Robert Plant and the repeating, staccato riff of guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham as they belted out the Led Zepplin classic 'Immigrant Song'... "On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore..." Pretty soon i found myself in Calshot, which is a village in the New Forest on the western shore of the Solent once the home of Lawrence of Arabia. Also famous for being the place where the Royal Flying Corps established Calshot Naval Air Station, and Supermarine developed some of their aircraft and flying boats, including the S6b, which went on to be developed into the Spitfire. Once i had arrived at the beach i figured i'd get out and stretch my legs for a bit, after driving the Ax for an hour or so i do feel the need to get out and have a walk round and a woodbine... Well, i would if i smoked, as it is i just had a walk round and chucked some stones into the Solent. By the time i had done this it was starting to get dark so i headed for home again. Quick photo of the Ax in the dark... Only kidding lol... Here's something a bit better to look at! As you can see i've cleaned my teeth today lol. Now, if you've been folowing this little thread from the beginning you have no doubt noticed that i have not yet posted the obligatory first fill shot normally taken the first time i fill up at a petrol station, well, this is because the car had a full tank of fuel when i bought it which probably doubled the value of it! I am hoping to be able to sell it without ever putting any go-go juice in it, but it's getting close... Really REALLY close!

Damn!.. EMPTY! Still, nearly made it... And here's the obligatory first fill shot. Still, it's better that it ran out on me rather than run out on the new owner when they pick it up! So, i filled up my petrol can after putting the whole five litres into the tank of the Ax, and to my surpirse i managed to get 6.31 litres of BP petrol... into my 5 litre CarPlan fuel can! I didn't even fill it to the brim! I will accept that it will maybe hold a little more than 5 litres, but nearly a litre and a half more, i'm not so sure!

Small litres at the garage? If you look into the allowable limits by weights and measures it's quite a lot of variance, and you can expect no-one will over deliver.....
