As well as working on proper cars (ie without ECUs) I end up working on later stuff as well and since I usually muck about with Vauxhalls I've been doing fine with Opcom on my laptop. Now with more requests to look at non-Vauxhalls I need a generic code scanner - preferably one which will also read live data.
Budget doesn't run to pro-stuff for what I need it for - up to £200.
Anyone got any recommendations please...?
Sorry it's talking about modern engines but I know some of us have to dirty our hands on them from time to time.

Bluetooth OBD reader with the torque app on a smartphone is pretty good and dirt cheap (£10 or less all in)

Bluetooth OBD and Torque is useful and a great budget option but can be annoyingly unreliable in mine and others experience and I seem to remember them having issues getting data with certain cars.

Reviews on the bluetooth gizmos tends to be varied. Most of the reviews of the Torque App seem to focus on aspects of it I wouldn't use. I just want a reliable way to read/delete codes and monitor live data.
Anyone use the Autel readers?

I have one, maxiscan MS509 had it 2 or 3 years now and it's fine BUT it's was only £50 so if you have a larger budget i'd go for something that can read ABS and airbag faults as well like the MaxiDiag Elite MD701 ?

Thanks - that's helpful. I was looking in that kind of price range because I know I'd be cross if I saved and few quid now and ended up needing more facilities first job in. Cheers.
