Okay, before I start this isn’t ebay gone wrong and my ‘problem’ is far, far removed from the awful situation that Pistonpopper is having to endure. In fact, quite the opposite. Two weeks ago I listed an electric ride-on children’s BMW Z4. Here’s the listing: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Official-BMW-Z4-childrens-electric-ride-on-car-/400837608866?pt=UK_Toys_Games_Outdoor_Toys_Bikes_Ride_Ons_LE&hash=item5d53c885a2All went fine, a good amount of bids and quite a result in my opinion. The next morning I have a paypal payment for the whole amount from the winning bidder (who judging from their feedback is very sound). There’s no note though, so I drop him a line to say thanks and to let me know when he wants to come and get it. I then receive an email saying that the bid was in error and that they won’t be collecting as they have no need or want the item and to keep the money if I want. It’s not much more than £40 but my problem is I don’t know whether to keep this cash or refund it? Yes, my auction was messed up, I’ve incurred fees and am still tripping over the damn thing (the main reason for listing it), but I can’t say I feel entirely comfortable about keeping the money when the winning bidder has had nothing in return. What would you guys do? I’ve got it relisted again and was thinking of refunding the original buyer if it sells again.

Refund it , it sounds like the person might not be too well mentally - you just don't know . Either way your conscience will be clear then .

I'd be tempted to refund it (minus your listing fees, naturally).
You'll feel better and everyone is happy.

re list it, if it sells for less 2nd time refund that amount, if it sells for more refund the full amount that way you wont be out of pocket, the first buyer gets part/ all of his money back and karma wont get you in the future.

Refund the money, notify eBay and they will cancel fees and you can relist for free. I must admit I'd bid on things and when won / paid decided not worth collecting so can see where the winning bidder is coming from as I too have said to buyer keep the money and relist.

Just refund minus fee's.
I won some alloys a few years back then realised they were wrong pcd.
I appologised and said i can either buy them or pay their fees, they were more than happy with me just paying the fees.

I'd refund the money minus the listing fees. I've bought the odd thing or two on ebay, then realised i havn't got the time etc to collect it, so i've ended up telling the seller to keep the money for letting him down.

You can not bid on something be accident as you have to confirm bids then confirm payment method and then confirm the payment, something very odd is going on there. I would refund the WHOLE amount, report to Ebay and paypal then you can make a second chance offer through Ebay. You can also block that person from bidding on your auctions.

Hi, I don't think there is anything dodgy at all. I can think of two scenarios, 1) he's drunk and bid and completed, going by the finish time not impossible but unlikely. 2) a child has got into Dad,s account and bid and completed. Dad only becomes aware when seller makes contact about collection. The buyer could have pulled all sorts of strokes to wriggle out of it. But doesn't, to his credit he just walks away from the deal leaving the money behind.

Yes, I do need a drink...
... the thing just finished again, this time for £13.50. 1 minute before the end I get an email from the winning bidder asking if I will ship, as if I can't, he can't buy it!
Not that the listing said collection only or anything...
Third time lucky, eh?
