For myself never been in the money despite working prior to retirement. Along the way i have seen and wanted the now retro cars that were the desirable ones Escort Mexico or stuff once cheap in their day but now demanding high money. As a result i tend to purchase what i can afford and treasure it as a very close second to what i really would have. Having said that if the money was available i would own an unpractical Porsche 911. Got me wondering how many of us actually drive the retro of choice or have to be happy with what we can afford and love that retro accordingly ? . Finally i am quite happy with my old rover as its comfortable. quick enough for me and getting wary of the swap and sell forums attracting some unscrupulous people so until funds in the shape of inheritance or lottery appeared i will be more than happy to keep my Porsche 911 on the waiting list.

I think I always just kept my wish list simple, Skoda Rapid, Viva coupe, something with a turbo, something old and British, something eastern block, Monza GSE all ticked off. I have no particular interest in supercars or the like but the one I won't ever be able to check off my list is a Lotus Carlton .
Buy something you like, enjoy it.

I prefer an underdog, the 'desirable' cars end up being the most common in a way, take minis, I love them, had 1 when I was 14 and 8 more followed over the years, but everyone saves them, they get handed around and hold their value.
Now, look at Metros, I broke maybe 5 for spares, threw them away...
Now if someone said to me which I'd rather have, Metro every time, apart from a few at the gathering I haven't seen a nice one in ages!

Another fan of the underdog ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) had many different classic/retro rides, trouble is although I've rarely lost any money when I've sold them on, I always seem to just miss the "bubble" sold my vw split panel van for 6.5k after 4 years ownership which is what I paid for it, so I was happy ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) 12 months later when the prices went stratospheric I could have doubled that ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) bought my 924 as a keeper though for a good price and hoping that may be on the up value wise....still hanker after a "proper" porsche though ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I make the best of what I have, weirdly, I do not have a car of my own a "play thing" so to speak, I sold my last car in November. I try to stick to no more than a grand for my "play thing" (I do run a modern daily for the family 56 plate picasso had it 6 years) but I do not see the point of spending 4-5k on a car that I rarely use, (2000 miles a year in my own car over the last 12 years). I also like different, I am currently thinking about a focus saloon a mk1 and fitting coilovers, and focus rs style 18" wheels and just keeping it clean, and I still reckon when its time to move it one I will get the same back what I paid for it.
Over the years the most money I have lost is on nearly new or new cars, but since 2005 I have looked at it differently. Ii bought a fiat marea 2.0 hlx estate 5 cylinder for £870, sold that 2 years later for £950. Then I bought a mondeo st24 for £1300, had that a year and sold that for £1300, then another marea 2.0 hlx estate which cost me £1500, but it caught fire, so I stripped it and got £1100 back, and then another fiat marea 20v hlx estate paid £375 for it. Spent a few hundred onit, and sold that almost 3 years later for £850. Then I bought a stilo estate for £970 had that almost 3 years failed the MOT badly and didn't have the time to put it right so sold that for £600. so all in all, it works out better financially. The Newer cars and new cars lost the most, and I decided that was a bad idea to do that again unless i was going to keep it till it was beyond economical repair.
I like the undesirable cars, you get alot for your money and often are fully loaded and when you put a few choice mods on them it does make people look twice at them.

I need a car to be engaging to drive, interesting to look at, affordable to purchase and run and as a result what I've got is ideal.
If I had more money than sense of course I'd end up with a Lamborghini Countach, a Citroen SM, any number of special coach built streamliners from the 30s and 40s and at least one Citroen DS. Somehow though, I don't think I'd enjoy driving them as much, I think it would be too stressful to constantly think about them getting damaged or stolen and it would suck all the enjoyment out.
I'll stick with what I've got and what I can afford, using a little bit of brain to make my heart happy.

i have owned most of the retros i hold close to my heart, there has always been one thats been out of my reach, that has been the 3 door cosworth, in my earlier years it was down to insurance costs now the insurance is reasonable it is cost of purchase so ill have to make do with my replica and i will build a nice YB for it.

Guess its all down to where you stand in the social circle of life I like all the above have 'my level' IE things within my range of actually affording
The high fliers - Ferrari's and that sort / E types, you know the stuff. I appreciate but they don't ring my bell, because I cant possibly buy one.
But If I was a Harley street Dr or a Footie player - I guess Ferrari's and Porsche Bentleys etc.. You could afford quite easily so They are 'their' Runabouts
I am 10 years ago cutting edge! My fozzer is the first car Ive ever had with heated seats. Simple plesures!

Fred your right its about our social status i suppose. Been fortunate in a previous job to have driven lots of retro and desirable vehicles of which some never lived up to the hype. Having said that not one jot jealous of these rich folk and their ferrari s / its a compromise between whats in your wallet against what you buy and get enjoyment from. More comments i read better i feel that I'm on the right thinking track with so many other members saying as much.

Agree with social status dictating our desires. I can't really afford anything, a tax rebate bought me my old Polo, which was my daily drive, and my MGB and the Honda Acty were both free bar transportation costs. The only other cars I've bought came from the inheritance from my grandparents (£500 Nissan Micra) and the money from the insurance when my Micra was nicked (£400 Corsa). Emma's 205 was a £100 rescue from the scrap man. When searching for dream project cars on Ebay I set the price limit at about £1500, even then I know it's gonna be a long time until that's happening.
I was in a car park a few months ago, and there was a brand new Nissan GTR and Bently Continental GT. I said 'woah look at that' and headed straight over to a very tatty Honda Ballade for a proper look. Even took photos. It was lovely

I care not for the 'norm' and can say, hand on heart, that everything I own and drive I wholeheartedly enjoy and wouldn't change a single one (apart from one which is rather bent as of yesterday afternoon ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) )

Its what you make of life. I do tend to err towards the 'underdogs' as said above. You know you have an underdog when Corgi Vanguards havent a model of it! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Like - VENTORAS! be curse word

Like that vanguard model toy comment Retro Rides is the forum of no egos and down to earth no nonsense motoring Proved that point one day at M4 services as filling up my Suzuki home brewed 4x4 a supercar pulled in cant remember the name off hand but as i filled up the supercar owner was looking at my special not with disgust but a genuine enthusiasts way which reinforced back then in 2006 i was on the right path to motoring enjoyment / that underdog thing again. Like others in reality cannot afford big budget nor wish to be tied to hire purchase so probably in my street of new tin cans I'm probably one of the few that actually own my own car and its British. Never made any profit in four decades but never set out on this journey to get rich. Sure Lottery win would get me my dream retro filling station but the inner good feeling of owning retro cannot be bought.

I bought a Cortina mk1, but apparently I bought the least desirable version EVER (1200cc, deluxe not standard, 4-door, pre-Aeroflow). Still had plenty of fun with it. I really wanted a Giulia, I bought one but had to go for the much cheaper Nuova which no one wanted because of its plastic grille. People have now changed their minds and they've become expensive as well. I wanted a Biturbo, and inadvertently bought a tatty one. This one still isn't worth much more, broken down at the moment, but should be a keeper.
All in all, I don't think it'd be wise to say "if I can't have the best version I'm not having anything". You enjoy a particular car, not a model within its range and among its competitors. It may have been cr*p when new, overpriced, sluggish, but now that time has made it irrelevant anyway you get to see other things.

I'm going to turn it on its head and say I'm the underdog, not the car. Never really had money and the most I've spent on a car is £2500 with most sub £1k but always driven cars that look expensive. My 635 CSi is a prime example, paid £900 as a non runner, ran it stock and tidy, and average Joe on the street perceives it as an expensive motor. W124's are the king of this illusion, but for it to work you need to run them stock and tidy IMO, a slammed car or a scruffy banger and the illusion's blown .

retoade you have a strong point that stands out as nearer the truth than we realise I too have run what appears expensive cars but are in fact pocket money yesterday cars My current Rover was nearer 18 k new but owes me £ 600 at the moment and my Mercedes c230 looked clean yet owed me about the same as did a nice Saab turbo 9000 which proves the point. Never seem to achieve the complete stock look but any mods are subtle and i call them period accessories etc. From all the positive comments I'm now thinking i didnt settle for Retro Second Best after all / i have the best i can afford already sat on the driveway.

Nothing wrong with a few period mods, it's more like extreme looks, like say I'd rat looked my 635, that blow it cold out of the water.
There's also the perception they're expensive to run. When I turned up with a 635 my old man said '...and how are you going to afford to run that?' He worked in the motor trade all his life! When I told him it was £200 for a phase 2 service with a BMW specialist he nearly fell over. He was expecting double that.
I'd love an M3, hell I'd even settle for a 325i Sport, or an R107 Merc SL, but I can't afford one, at least not one I'd want to buy. So is my 325i cabby second best? Hell no! I love it. In fact I'm longing for salt free roads so I can give it a blast.

I suppose I am in between all of the above.
My story, to keep it as brief as I can was that I've always been a Retro fan but as I have had company cars for the last 20years, owning a 'Toy' was just that, a toy. I had a mint 84 Celica but it sat hardly used so sold it and had a holiday. Then came child...
When the divorce came through, I bought a 2.8i Capri and kept it for 2 years before I needed a holiday again. SOLD
FFWD to 8yrs ago - Another Capri - A Laser - Got it to fast road spec at which point my Nephew wanted it - SOLD
About 5yrs ago, I got ill, proper ill and had to take 6 months off work unpaid - Sold all my possessions, all my valuables, everything - Just to survive.
At the same time, I met Michelle (My newly wedded wife) She helped me back to health over a two year period which meant changing my role with my company and losing the car etc
Once better, we were going to get a small loan, and all of our savings (Not a lot) and get married...
Just before the planning started, @mercdan68 on here advertised his Granada - Wedding fund gone!
Kept that 8 months, sold it and built the Cortina with the proceeds. Sold that to build my current P100
To me, a retro is a toy, BUT crucially, I cannot afford to lose bucket loads of cash. Therefore, whatever toy I have, must be CAREFULLY chosen so that it will either not lose money when I sell, OR as has happened to my last two, increase in value.
That said, I am almost 5k into my P100 so far but value probably only 4k but hey ho, can't win em all!
