Although the new direct debit tax system has only been going a few months, has anyone flipped back and forth between taxing and sorning every month?
The reason I ask is my Citroen panel van has been sat on sorn since October. I sold my car over the xmas holidays, then on Jan the 1st I taxed my van with the new direct debit monthly system so I could have transport until I found a new car. My new car was bought last week, so I don't really need the van for a little while, so was thinking of sorning it at the end of January and then just taxing it when I need it for the odd month here and there.
Just wondered if anyone has done similar, and wether its easy to cancel and restart the direct debit.

Me too. I bought a cheap 4x4 today ('99 Honda CR-V) which i only intend to use if we get snow, do i buy a years tax then sorn it online in a month or two, and do they put it back on your debit card, or send you a cheque like they used to in the old days when you returned a tax disc?
If monthly, do they mind you just cancelling the direct debit or do they want you to officially cancel the tax first somehow.

I asked them re the 6 month DD when I taxed mine. I plan to delete the renewal next week now that the money has been taken. They said it was fine and the car would still be taxed for 6 months.
So I saved myself about £8 lol

I got a cheque from them last week from selling my GTI in December, if thats any help.

Cheque in the post is what I got for a previous car. If it were me I would personally sell the car irrelevant of date. Have you seen the thread about awkward sellers? . It'll cost you more in time (and possibly even fuel) if you hold out for the end of the month and do a deal almost in desparation to sell the van at that timepoint for the sake of £20. I don't agree with the tax system but I also like to keep sight of the task in hand; selling the car .

I think the question is more around keeping a car and SORN'ing it, rather than selling.

Indeed it is.
In which case SORN it at the end of the month; this can be done online.

Taxed a car the other day that I had just bought, then sold it a week later. DVLA site was more than happy to take my money but site woudn't let me SORN it (or get my money!) Phoned them, they said i'd have to register it to myself, then SORN it, then send the new V5 off when it arrives with the new keeper on, in the mean time, surely that's going to screw up them trying to use and tax the car?
DVLA really didn't think this through.
I think I'm going to have to get some trade plates to avoid future problems.

Just go on line and sorn it but remember that if paying moonthly the DD goes out on the 1st of the month so you would have to cancel the DD before that and declare sorn before the payment is due for the new month.iirc you can declare sorn a couple of days before the new month starts. Hope that makes sense?

If you've paid for 12months tax can you then put it on SORN and get a refund?

If you've paid for 12months tax can you then put it on SORN and get a refund? Yes, cheque for the surrendered tax drops thro your letterbox a few days later. You only get refunds on full months so your sorn timing needs to be before the end of a month. If you buy 6mths outright, the 6mrhs charge carries a premium and you don't get that back. 12 mths does not carry a premium so you spend more but lose less when you sorn.

I just taxed another vehicle on DD, and apparently the first payment doesnt come out until the 17th (couple of weeks) wonder what happens if you sorn it before then, or cancel the DD ! (I bet they will come after you for one month's tax. )
