A rare surviving Ford Mondeo Mk1 2.0 GLX with one owner and 46,605 miles.
EQUIPMENT
Reinforced steel safety cage, bodyside mouldings, body colour bumpers, halogen headlamps, front and rear fog lamps, driver airbag, front seat belt grabbers, perimeter alarm and safeguard immobiliser, central double locking with torch key, tinted glass, heated rear window and ‘Quickclear’ heated front screen, heated washer jets, electric front windows, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, electric driver’s seat height adjust, Keycode RDS stereo cassette (model 2006), courtesy and luggage compartment lighting, front and rear headrests and armrests, tilt/slide sunroof.
EXTERIOR
Launched in Europe in 1992 by The Ford Motor Company, the first generation Mondeo replaced the much loved and hugely popular Sierra. With early models now well over twenty years old, the Mk1 Mondeo once a very common sight on UK roads has now become a rare car. This 2.0i 16v GLX example has been incredibly well preserved owing to one fastidious keeper from new and a mere 46,605 miles covered. Finished in factory original Stardust Silver (code 6 3) the paintwork boasts a bright pure shine and polished finish. All factory panels are completely free from corrosion and the underside is beautifully clean. Minor markings commensurate with age and the cars unrestored nature do not offend, but worthy of mention is a small chip above the nearside rear door handle, minimal light scratches from boot loading and a very faint scuff to the lower front bumper, visible upon very close inspection only. A very faint undulation to the offside rear door is barely noticeable. All trim sections and original badges are present and intact and the supplying Ford dealer plates and rear screen sticker remain fitted. A delightful modern classic Ford in exceptional condition.
INTERIOR
The interior of this immensely cossetted example is simply perfect. The original Papillon Opal upholstery (code HC) is spotless with no wear or damage to the fabric whatsoever. The cut pile carpets are pristine having been protected by floor mats from new and the headlining is perfect. The driver inclined fascia and incorporated switchgear is as new and all functions operate seamlessly including the original Keycode RDS stereo cassette (model 2006). Even sections of the factory protective cellophane wrapping to the inner door steps remain intact! An enormously comfortable interior and even inch representative of a 1990’s showroom example, truly exceptional.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Factory fitted with the 2.0i DOHC 16v four cylinder unit, the power output of 136bhp and 180Nm torque allows a top speed of 129mph and 0-60 in 9.2 seconds. Maintained to an exceptional standard and having covered such low miles, the whisper quiet and smooth engine offers flawless performance. The clean engine bay features a correct Ford battery and all factory stickers, tags and plates remain exactly as the manufacturer intended. The five speed gearbox is light, precise and effortless to offer an upmost relaxed manner.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The original 5.5 x 14in steel wheels have the factory correct GLX wheel trims fitted. A small chip to the nearside rear trim interrupts an otherwise pristine set and the 185/60 R14 tyres have masses of tread remaining. Diagonally split dual line brakes with servo and anti-lock assistance bring the car up straight and steady.
HISTORY FILE
Registered new on 11th April 1996 by Ford Main Dealer Chiltern Garage of Sudbury, the first and only ever keeper was a Mr Derek Johnson. A vehicle order record in the history file confirms the new vehicle order and part exchange of his 1986 Ford Granada. The Ford plastic wallet contains the original stamped service book along with every handbook, radio guide and dealership literature from point of sale. The fully stamped service record displays thirteen entries from the supplying dealer up to 2005 and the same independent specialist thereafter with the most recent entry at 45,590 miles. With only 1000 miles covered since, the car is wanting for nothing and all fluids and oils are clean.
Three keys including the original red master key and plastic keycode tags as well as a dealership sales brochure complete the package.
Representing a rare sight on today’s road, this cherished first generation Mondeo has been preserved in exceptional order and benefitted from impeccable maintenance. Having now decided to give up driving owing to advancing years, Mr Johnson decided to part with the car ready for the next discerning keeper to recognise the appeal of this modern classic Ford.
MOT November 2015, HPI Clear.
