I took the 6" Lotus steels off my Mk1 'tina last night to get access for a bit of rust repair, and noticed the holes seemed to be quite a bit larger than the wheel studs, also the nuts seemed very deep into the wheel (if that makes sense) when done up. Should I be worried, and are the wheels going to fall off? Can anyone help?

Have they been fitted to something different before? Sounds like theyve been drilled out but i may be wrong.

Can be quite a problem on old Ford wheels. Its due to the nuts being done up many times over enthusiastically with an air gun. The holes become enlarged and the nuts can pull through.I had the problem on a couple of Lotus steels and had the holes welded and reground.

Who did you get to do the welding and re-grinding? A small garage near me in London but its not a hard job for a competent welder to build it back up and grind the taper seat back in. If the nuts look quite "buried" in the holes I would have it done sooner rather than later as under hard cornering they could pull through or at least cause stress cracks.

I just need to find someone local to do it! Anyone know any capable garages in Guildford or Godalming or surroundings?

I guess you've not had any problem with wheels you had welded, sorry to doubt your experience. Does the garage who welded up your wheels still exist? By the way: Here is the reply from Mr T for information: No, for steel wheels you can only use taper seat "acorn" nuts, however there are ones with wider seats called bulge which should prevent them sinking into your wheels. Sleeve nuts are for alloy wheels with thick centres where the sleeve goes down inside the wheel. Cheers. ;D

Mine were done around 4 years ago, I use the standard nuts, never had any problems. Mr T is right in saying you cannot use sleeve nuts on steel wheels. Why he thinks there would be a problem is beyond me - you are only replacing metal with metal!! Obviously you have to make sure the taper is ground back to the correct profile but its not rocket science. I shall have a word with the garage who did mine and see how busy they are.

the only problem i can see is that when you weld metal the metal next to the weld weakens and becomes dry and brittle.
Doesnt mean it will be a problem though, my guess is it should be ok.

Hi I just read that they are steels, yeah you don't use sleeve nuts on steels! Might be worth taking a wheel to a show. Maurice (Mr T) is at most of the NSRA events and he could probably advise what's best. On my Lotus steels (5.5J ones) the holes are bigger than the studs as the taper locates the wheel. Come to think of it yeah the nuts do sit very deep on the wheel and on the front hubs I have to use a 5mm spacer because the nut bottoms out on the stud before it secures the wheel. It was the same with the other 2 sets I have had so I don't think it's anything to worry about
