Overview
Here we have for sale a 1992 MK2 Golf GTI 16 valve, in the desirable colour of Oak Green.
This MK2 has benefited from a full re-spray, engine rebuild and running gear overhaul over the years. This makes the car a real pleasure to drive and belies the current mileage of 152,500.
The details of this car are as follows;
History
First registered on 17th January 1992, this Golf has had just 6 owners in total with the last owner acquiring the car in September 2006. The owner’s handbooks are present along with the service book, fully stamped up to 2002/109,000 miles. There’s a stack of receipts for work undertaken since this, which includes an engine rebuild, some of which completed by well known, C&R Enterprises, mechanical refresh and the car has received a full re-spray about 4 years ago.
The car now has just less than 152,500 miles on the clock which is believed to be genuine, but cannot be guaranteed as there are a couple of early MOT certificates missing. Certificates are present from 1997-2007 and after 2008 the car was taken off the road for the re-spray and re-commissioning so was not MOT’d again until March 2014.
When we acquired the car we put a fresh MOT on it after completing some work, so the test now expires on 5th November 2015 (No advisories.)
The car is also HPI clear and retains its original registration number.
Body
Overall the bodywork is in very good condition with no dents or scrapes. The previous owner had the car fully re-sprayed circa 4 years ago, since when it’s done little mileage. The finish is not concours but as a result of the low miles that the paint has seen there are no stone chips on the front of the car as you’d expect. The paint has responded well to a machine polish and shines really nicely now.
Usual MK2 Golf suspect areas such as the windscreen scuttle and filler neck are in great condition and not rotten, same applies to the wings and arches.
For the MOT we had to attend to some areas underneath the car, namely both rear chassis rails in front of the rear beam mounts. The rear end was stripped, the rot was cut out and new metal professionally welded in (no patch-over jobs) bringing the underside of the car up to standard.
The sharp-eyed among you will notice that the rear of the car has been de-badged. This was done professionally with a welded plate over the VW badge recess and not stuffed full of filler. Also the black decal around the rear window is not present. Otherwise the car is standard.
Finally, all plastic trim is in good condition, although the rear bumper does have some staining on the black plastic. The wider, G60 arch spats are fitted too, allowing the running of wider wheels if desired.
Mechanical/Running gear
The previous owner had seen to a lot of the refurbishment of the running gear, with new brakes all round, a lot of new sensors and parts fitted to the engine. This included a cam belt, full service, ball joints, track rod ends and a new springs/coils set up (not coilovers) which gives a slightly lowered appearance whilst maintaining a smooth ride and a balanced drive in the twisty stuff!
In addition to this, the car has benefited from the following major works;
• A top-end rebuild in December 2001/circa 101k miles by C&R Enterprises
• A new clutch and gearbox refurbish in March 2002/circa 103k miles
• A bottom-end rebuild in December 2005/circa 138 miles
The above work is evident in just how smoothly the engine in this MK2 runs – it’s the sweetest we’ve driven and starts from hot and cold and runs without issues.
In our time with the car we replaced all of the rear rigid and flexi brake pipes (an advisory on the old MOT) and have fitted a new battery. For us, the car just needed some finishing touches as it was perhaps 99% assembled, which has included some new seals, trim items and warning stickers.
Finally, the car rides on BBS RZs with all four centre caps present and virtually new Uniroyal tyres. (7mm tread front, 8mm rear.)
Interior
The interior is in great condition for the age of the car and has no saggy head lining as you may expect. The driver’s seat did have a hole in the bolster but we’ve replaced the seat cover and bolster foam with good used ones from a passenger seat so the driver’s seat looks and feels excellent now.
All carpet, seats and trim are in good condition, the parcel shelf is good too, with no speaker holes and there is a VW motorsport gear knob fitted.
Everything works on the car except for a little bleeding on the LCD clock display but the time is still legible and the oil temperature doesn’t register on the MFA (we’ll continue to try and resolve this.) The car has a Kenwood CD player/radio fitted.
The spare wheel and jack is present in the boot. The boot floor has a localised area with a few blisters in the paint – we assume from previous scratching? These have been treated and can confirm that the floor is not rotten!
Finally, there is a Toad alarm/immobiliser fitted with two sets of keys and two remotes. The driver’s door is locked with a separate key to the other locks (not uncommon!) but you can use just the remote anyway.
Summary
This MK2 Golf GTI 16-valve is an all-round excellent car with little required for the next owner other than to enjoy it. You could spend a little more time and money making it concours if that’s your preference, or simply use it daily and service it when required.
Any inspection is welcome and please contact us for further information. Over 30 photos can be found here – www.yesterdayscars.co.uk/available-cars/mk2-vw-golf-gti-16v/
