I've got this alloy cased Toyota 5-speed gearbox sitting in the shed. It came with the car when I bought my orange mk1. The guy reckoned it was a Celica 5-sp so I was doing some checking. And looking at this site: Wxx Gearbox Specsit looks to me like its the Supra W58 version. Although the pictures on that site look to have a steel spacer in the middle (the dark bit) whereas this one looks to be alloy. Anyone know or have any ideas on what this one might be?

It does not look like my W50, that has a 4 bolt gear lever turret and detachable bell housing, but from memory looks like the same supra box I had in my Cortina,

Looks R154ish, do you have a picture of the other side? I'm comparing it to limited photos I took of my '89 Supra. Mine had the clutch slave cylinder on the side shown, but that could be specific to the Supra.

Thanks for the input so far guys. Here's a pic of the other side, and one looking down the bellhousing. I found this site too that compares boxes: Toyota GearboxesIt has this pic of a R154 on the left next to a W5x. Looking at the ribs on the bellhousing and the middle section of the 'box it looks like its not a R154

I don't think its an R154, there's a pair of drain and fill plugs on the side shown in the second set of pictures. On mine they were towards the back of the main gearcase part, the fill about halfway up and the drain at the bottom (but still on the side).
I'm on my phone but I'll try to get a couple of my very unclear pics up.

It is one of the W5* series. All are the same basic shape and very similar apart from ratios. Could be W55, W56, W57, or W58. Most likely W55 as it seems to have the 4 cylinder bell housing (starter on right) so is presumably from a 4 cylinder Celica. All the W58s I've seen have had a speed sensor on the top for traction control as they are used in the 6 cylinder Supras. These can have either steel or aluminium centre plates (steel regarded as stronger). W57 is similar but has lower 5th gear and is rare in UK. W56 is usually used in trucks (eg 2wd Hilux) with the 4wd version looking very similar at the engine end. Various links, not all in full agreement with each other. www.toymods.org.au/forums/tech-conversions/18667-toyota-manual-gearboxes-their-ratios-w-r-v-k-t-p.htmlwww.retrotech.co.nz/Tech/Toyota-boxes.phpusers.tpg.com.au/users/loats/technical/ma61/gearboxes.htmlVery decent gearbox, supposedly good for around 300hp and only 35kg. Getting somewhat rare and pricey now due to their age and popularity for transplant into Healeys, Jags, Triumphs etc. Have a W58 in my Vitesse and it's great. Nick

Thanks for the reply Nick. All good information, but hard to pick which one it is just looking at it.
Looks like I need to get on and figure out the ratios as suggested in one of your links.
I'll report back once I've found out what they are. Thanks again for the help guys.
