Starts first turn of the key. Idles in the correct manner. No leaks, no bangs or any other untoward sounds.
Lovely burble from the V8.
No overheating - needle gets half way and sits there all day long. I spent over an hour in M25 stand still traffic and that needle never budged from the half-way point.
Gearbox changes are as they should be in a 540i – smooth and effortless. Flick her into Sports mode, and she changes her cruising personality and becomes a raging animal! Will outrun a lot of modern cars on the road.
Suspension is tight and solid. Brakes are good and the big 5 stops in a perfect straight line.
Happily sits at 70mph on the motorway cruising and returning an average of 30mpg on a run. I think that’s pretty good for a 4.4 litre V8 BMW.
Fitted with a set of genuine 16” 5 Series ‘Turbine’ alloy wheels, which are in excellent condition.
Comes with a Detachable Tow Bar, which resides in the boot with its own carry case. The rear shock absorbers have been uprated to cope with towing, but the original BMW Boge shocks are also included (please see photo). The is a removable black plastic section which covers the tow bar connection.

Apart from the rear wiper, everything works as it should. This is a true testament to the BMW E39 build quality.
No warning lights on the dashboard.
Interior is in very good condition for the year and mileage. Driver’s seat has little wear on the bolster and a few minor marks here and there. However, the seats are very supportive and comfortable and the rear seats are like new! NO rips or tears! It’s all nice and solid. The carpets and seats would benefit from a clean – nothing a little elbow grease can’t sort out!
The exterior is finished in one of the best colours for the pre-facelift E39 – Biarritz Blue metallic. Generally clean and presentable, please see photos. Marks, blemishes and stone chips consistent with mileage. However, the bodywork is showing signs of wear: The tailgate, rear arches and a few other areas have corrosion / rust blisters. You can pick up a complete tailgate in the same colour on eBay for around £75.
She's not mint but I'm not asking silly money for her. These 540i’s are only going up in value now, especially in Touring guise.
Come and take a look / test drive to see if it's for you. Better to judge for yourself in the flesh.
Was purchased early December 2014 as a stop gap whilst my 8 Series was having some work carried out. Now surplus to requirements. Logbook to be sent off as soon as it arrives (full reciept will be given).
