I'm trying to tax my car, but dvla website is saying:
"The 16-digit reference number on your V11 reminder form is valid from the 5th of the month in which your current vehicle tax expires until the end of the following month. If you are trying to use this service too early then please try again from the 5th of the month. If you are trying to use this service too late then please use your V5C Registration Certificate (Log Book) or visit a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax."
Is this a grace period or something? I can't tax it, so now I can't drive it?

Not sure, but i think you should be able to just click on "i don't have the v11" and tax it using the doc ref no. on the v5?
edit: just read your post again and it seems you're confused about "the month in which it expires" I'm pretty sure it expires at midnight on the 31st and not on the 1st if that makes sense - so it expired on december 31st and you would have been able to tax it from dec 5th onwards. Hope this helps.

As EmDee says, if it expired in November then the reminder is now void? Do you have the log book? I did both of mine without the reminder yesterday.

Ah OK that makes sense now. New car so only have the new keeper bit. Can only be used at post office, useless online/phone.

Taxing using the 'doc ref number' results in this:
"Vehicle details could not be found
Sorry, we cannot find your vehicle details. This means you cannot proceed with your vehicle tax or SORN application."
I want to pay so I can drive my car legally. It's never easy with this taxing thing.

You should be able to do it with the small barcode on the side. That's how I did mine at the beginning of December. And that was online too

Where would you put the barcode in? It's 20 digits

There should be a 12 digit one. Edit: sorry its not the barcode. Its the 'document reference number' Its below the bit that you fill in. (sort still recovering from last nights festivities )

Yeah that's the one that isn't recognised. This was a problem that 'plagued' the DVLA website when it launched. Do you think I'd get away with explaining to the police that the DVLA website is still 'BETA' ... groan ...

post office job then. they just scan the barcode on the end of the new keeper supplement, you wait a couple seconds while they check for ins + MOT on the database, you hand over cash, walk out wondering why you took your MOT and ins certificate with you just in case

Ah why didn't you say! If it's a new car you've just bought you'll need to click on the New Keeper option www.taxdisc.service.gov.uk/When you select New Keeper, it uses a different doc ref no. with an extra digit. AKA the "V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number". This is on the smaller slip you get when you buy it - the V5C/2 as opposed to the V5C. Not sure on SORNed cars, but AFAIK if it has an MOT it should be fine. Give it another go, I'd be surprised if they put any barriers between your money and them. EDIT: bunch of posts since I started writing that one - if it's an old Blue V5 then you might be right - post office it is then...

Adding a number 2 before the doc ref number gives you the new keepers number. I recently bought a proton on sorn and misplaced the new keepers slip so called the previous owner the next day and got the ref number, added a 2 then chose taxing it with new keepers slip.

At the Post Office, the DVLA system is linked to the motor insurance database, so it automatically checks for current insurance against the reg number, it's the same system the Police ANPR system uses. They only ask for the paperwork if the computer 'says no'.

Why don't people just tax at the post office & be done with it? All this on-line sh1t does my head in. When all the Post Offices are closed (They close one every week) we will all be worse off, but if you don't use it you lose it.
