So - are they special ? I currently have 4 bolts with washers and nyloc nuts. They keep slackening off ? scary stuff I'm sure you'll all agree... Rimmer Bros are charging a couple £2.25 a bolt/nut. Does that mean that they're special or just that Rimmers think a "Discontinued SD1 bolt" is worth more than the one my bolt guy gets me ? Gearbox LT77, Prop of unknown origin - Cheers... Rob With front bumper / wheel spikes and red rims.. Whaddya think ?

None of the propshaft bolts I have removed from various cars looked particularly special As long as the unthreaded part is the same length and it's the same tensile strength any replacement bolt should be fine. Oh and the wheel spikes look cool

You just need to keep the same strength properties as the ones you have. The are often quite a fine pitched thread as well. Most fastener companies will have some equivalents in stock. If they are coming loose either the current threads are worn or more likely the nylocs are no good. Nylocs should really be only used once after that they arent as effective. I normally use a threadlock on propshaft bolts when I put them on as well.

Have a look at the number on the head of the bolt - high tensile (ie OK for automotive use) are usually marked '8.8' - don't use B&Q's best as at best they are sh*te quality and not up to grade. I have 8x1.25 bolts in the front of my propshaft with nyloks and threadlock and up to now, no problems (and I don't drive gently..........)

Don't high tensile bolts often have a merc-like logo on the head as well?

I'm not sure but i think you would be better off getting stronger ones than 8.8s.
You will find there is many differant systems of bolt markings in use.

Most teh ones I have done work on recently have been 12.8`s with a fine pitched thread, admittedly its mainly been on 4wds as its been at least a year since I have had to remove a prop on a rwd
