Hi, forgive my lack of posts, more of a background reader than anything else. However, any advice here will be much appreciated.
I have a few questions, so will try and break it all down...
1. I bought a car very recently (A late 1980s Escort for those interested). I bought it purely as a parts donor, for my other 80s Escort, from a salvage yard. The seller never told me as such, but I did my own HPI check on it and found it to be a Cat C. No bother, I only want to strip it bare for parts, then scrap the shell. I just didn't want to buy anything that was stolen. It has a broken headlamp, broken indicator lense, and a crack in the front bumper... no panel damage. This, I would imagine is what wrote it off.
He had, and filled out the old style (blue) logbook, and I retained section 10, new keepers supplement (green slip). I know I wont get a full V5C, until its VIC checked. My first question is, where do I stand with tax/SORN? Its been untaxed since 1st October 2014. Will I get a notification letter before anything else, and then SORN from there, or should I SORN it now, using the number from green slip? Will I incur any fines in this time?
2. As I say, I only intended to strip the car, and scrap the shell. Therefore the Cat C status, and no V5C didn't bother me. However, a friend of mine introduced me to a headache... The car has a pretty nice 6- digit registration number on it, which is original to the car, but more importantly, transferable. I didn't realise this, but now the idea is in my head..... I would like to, if possible, keep the plate on retention when the car is scrapped.
My question here is, what do I need to do to do that? As far as I can make out, I will need to have a V5C, which means I will need to get the car VIC checked. What documents does the car need to be VIC checked? V5C? Tax? SORN? MOT? Insurance? I would rather hear from people who have actually put cars through VICs, as I have done some research and am still none the wiser. I work in the motor trade, and have access to MOT facilities, trade plates, and company insurance.
I don't plan to strip the car until the spring/summer, so have some time to play with. All I want to do, is keep the plate, with as little aggravation and cost possible. I don't have a car to put the plate on right now, and am not even sure what I plan to do with it. I just really like the plate, and would be sad to see it die with the car. I've always liked the idea of having a plate put by, but cannot justify the expense involved in buying one. Plus, when alls said and done, I could sell it to recoup some cash if nothing else.
As before, any help/ experience anyone can give me would be very appreciated, I have spoken to the DVLA, and DVSA, but both were about as useful as trying to speak to someone underwater.
Thanks
