Had to pop down to the local supermarket this morning and decided to take the Scimitar. Its been raining up here for nigh on two days solid but, stupid me, i didnt expect to see a swimming pool in the passenger footwell when i got in it..... I also, naively, thought that the heater blower would actually demist the windscreen better than an asthmatic could blow a candle out and that the wipers would, swiftly and efficiently, move the rain from the screen. While I was pondering all of this I could see the appreciative stares and glances from all around, my ears were filled with the beautiful sound of the V6, my nostrils were being overloaded with the smell of worn leather and my face was aching from the grin factor my 28 year old car was giving me. There aint much better than being a Retro head! ;D

great isn't it ;D there's a reason why we love older cars, and to the outside world it would appear we are blessed with a particular case of masochism.

Yeah I think we've all had that feeling I don't even bother driving mine in the rain- it has no heater to de-mist with, the wiper is cack (my fault really, I bodged a Fiat one on it), and the carpet gets wet. But when I gave a friend a lift the other day she couldn't stop grinning and asking questions about it, loving the bits of it that for me the novelty had worn off with and i'd been taking for granted. You just need comments or reactions from other people every now and then to remind you that what your driving is a bit different and fun

Yea. It's funny how little cosmetics or irritating things actually matter when you enjoy driving the car itself

I was thinking just the same about my old e28 BMW this morning. It doesn't matter that the heater doesn't work properly or the annoying squeek the steering makes when its wet, or the fact the brake warning light is always on, I just love being in it.

I have no heater,so the temperature is whatever it is outside. I have mono speed windscreen wipers that are quite good at speading the droplets of water over the windscreen. I have no carpet, so that it doesn't absorb the water that runs along the floor and out through the many holes. I have a 875cc engine that only runs on 3 cylinders when it cold, and only idles when it feel like it.
Boy do I love it though ;-)

i love the fact that when you wash it you can see water running down the inside of the door glass where your seals don't..... well, seal anymore. the nearside footwell fills through the bulkhead, must do that soon. scrapping thems too easy, it would be like taking a blind incontinent sheepdog out in the yard and blowing the mother away. keep it until the suffering comes to a natural end, you look after each other, keep each other happy, he's served you well. love him til the bitter end!

I drove the Amazon in the rain a lot, enough to realise that the door seals were knackered and that the plated up sunroof was full of bees and collected water when stood. So I get curse word on a lot. But I expect it now

Mind the Rover has the excuse of being 43 years old. Don't think I'll be perfek by that age either.

all I have to live with is wild stares of people both confused, and incredulous, gaping as if I couldn't have driven past in anything more shocking, save the doggy van from dumb and dumber... I feel a little silly when you lot live with proper irritations! [edit: oh! my dip beams don't work unless i wiggle the relay, as fuseboard is fried, and it leaks in heavy rain through the sunroof! result ]

I've just done 400 miles in my Merc this weekend, I love it! OK, the damn thing takes a bit of persuasion starting as the auto choke mechanism has died, the starter motor refuses to engage sometimes, it's noisy at speed 'cos the door seals have perished, it guzzles petrol, it's slow... but what the hell! I wouldn't have it any other way.
In one of the many traffic jams on the M1, some guy was honking his horn and waving out the window giving me the thumbs up from the fast lane (!)... you don't get that in an 05 plate Mundano ;D

I've had that in the 2CV a few times, restores your faith in mankind As for all the other things, hell yeah!!! Yesterday i was driving back from a mates in the 2CV and its pee-ing down with rain, i've got misted up sidewinds, the worn wiper spindles are letting more water into the car than they are clearing from the screen and the headwind meant that at one point i only had a flat out top speed of about 61mph but i love it none the less.

The one that got me was last Wednesday when my mate Max stopped by in his Humber Hawk. There we were, leaning on the front, heads under the bonnet when a bunch of 12-13yr old gobsh1tes came sauntering past, clocked the Hawk, clocked the Oxford....and one of 'em piped up with 'This car is hyyyyyyyyyyyyydramatic'. We laughed, at least he knew vaguely what they were!!!

I drove the Buick to work again today. Ah, those brakes, yeah, they are meant to be like that. No heat, no rear demist, "interesting" idle control on the auto choke, but ah, what a drive.

Just finished welding up the Alfas front wing tops - and she'll need the rear brakes doing yet again - but the looks it gets and the sound of an Alfa going through the tunnels here makes it all a small price to pay. The Triumph stinks - is starting to burn oil as the unleaded conversion was a myth I'll have to do myself and the wipers are completely useless in anything heavier than a mist - but she sounds and drives like nothing else...... I love it.

The Pop broke down twice on Tuesday and wouldn't start Saturday or this morning but I know what the problem is and I couldn't be bothered to fix it then because the parts are now sitting on my desk ready to fit. The roof leaks and it rains as hard on the passenger seat as it does outside but I don't care, it's not raining in my side
