I was wondering if somebody could help me out, me and my mates have currently got a mk1 cavalier 2.0 hls, i was wondering if the engine had much value? Weve been offered a v6 for the cavi but due to the fact its a budget project we would need to sell the current engine to raise the funds. Its a cam in head(?) Not the ohv like the later cavaliers tbh i don't know much about vauxhalls so any help would be appreciated

To be honest, not a lot. If it's a perfect low mileage unit with all the ancillaries then maybe £100, but finding anyone who wants one is tricky these days.
Also worth noting that if it's a budget build, a V6 isn't a great option. It's been done before but it's not easy unless you can fabricate everything; sump, engine mounts, exhaust, modified steering setup, lots to think about.
Easier option would be something like a 2.0 8v out of a Cavalier or Calibra, which would still need the sump and gearbox from a 1.8 Manta which are getting thin on the ground and expensive. I've converted mk1 Cavs to run on Manta GT/E fuel injected engines in the past, that's a worthwhile swap too.
I recommend getting onto the Manta club forums, plenty of advice available on there whatever route you end up going down!
Any pics of the car? If it's a GLS saloon it's a seriously rare car, I'm aware of three which still exist.

I assume it's a coupe in that case, all the GLS saloons were 4 doors but GLS coupes were relatively common. Does it look like this?

Just like mine then! Not many Cav coupes left out there. Don't suppose it's the '79 yellow one that's been on ebay?
Another option I nearly forgot about is finding a bigger CIH - there was a 2.2 in the mk2 Carlton but they're very thin on the ground, or the 2.4 Fronteras also used CIH engines. There are mods to be done to fit either, but minor compared to anything else.
If I was after more power on a budget I'd track down a cheap Frontera 2.4, break it for the engine and sell/weigh in the rest. A complete car won't cost more than a few hundred quid and there's a lot of scrap left over. Run it on twin 45s with a suitable inlet manifold and you'll see the same bhp as a redtop with a lot more bottom end torque so more useable on a day to day basis.
