1980 Land Rover Series 3 SWB 21/4 petrol
My dad and I purchased this Series 3 a few months ago as a joint project. Over the years we’ve had numerous Defenders and Series Land Rovers and wanted something we could play with and work on. We looked at a lot of Landys before finding this one. It had been purchased by someone who had got rid of a Defender and just wanted a Land Rover for occasional use. We think the difference between the Defender and Series came as a bit of a shock to the system, and he quickly put it up for sale again. Prior to this it had one long term owner, who owned a garage. The Land Rover has covered less than 2000 miles in the last 6 years. This is backed up by VOSA reports.
As I say, we purchased it as a joint project. Unfortunately we’ve just had news that my Dad is ill, and it will be some time before he is fit and well again, so we’ve sadly decided to sell. We’re both gutted, and would rather keep it but we have other priorities right now.
So, on to the Land Rover. It’s a marine blue, series 3. When we drove it back from Milton Keynes it the rear diff seal decided it didn’t like keeping oil in the diff. We recovered it home and whipped the diff out, replacing all seals and noting that it had fresh oil. We also spotted what seems to be a recently replaced chassis, and a recent gearbox too. The Land Rover is taxed until end of Feb 2015 and MOT until end of March 2015.
The Land Rover starts first turn of the key, and is fitted with a Webber carb, and runs superbly. The pics show exactly how clean it is under the bonnet. The bulk head is completely solid. The doors were slightly less so. We found rotten door tops were sitting on very rotten door bottoms, so we replaced them. The Land Rover now has brand new driver and passenger doors. The drivers door bottom needs painting.
We then fitted new seat belts, and decided we preferred the look of a truck cab. So we purchased a truck cab and ¾ tilt with sticks. We still have the hard top and full rear door, along with a rear bench seats. When we collected the truck cab (and all conversion parts) the infill panel was missing. The seller sent us an infill panel through – but it was wood. We’ll include that in the sale, but you will probably need a correct infill panel (around £50). (You can use the Land Rover fine without it)
The Land Rover is sitting on nearly new Defender rims (painted limestone to match the hardtop), with virtually new Michelins all round. It looks great on these. The grill was painted black, along with the headlight bowls. We fitted a brand new grill and painted the headlight bowls in correct marine blue.
The Land Rover is fitted with free wheeling hubs. Transfer box works fine and the gearbox is great (for a series – do NOT expect to be shortshifting in a hurry!)
Included is a very good condition deluxe centre seat.
All in all this is a fantastic Land Rover, and a great Series 3. You can use it every day, and tinker away to your heart’s content. Just be aware it’s a good car – not a concourse one!
Next on the list of jobs if we were to keep it would be:
New seats
Tidy up dash
Wiper motor cover
Infill panel
To confirm, the Land Rover is currently fitted with the truck cab. Included will be the ¾ canvas tilt and sticks, and a full hard top with windows and rear door. The roof for the hardtop is currently in Cannock, but we can sort logistics.
£3450.00
May take px for chop/bobber, motorcycle, (esp. Harley, Triumph, Ducati, BMW) classic or retro car. Plenty of picks on my Flickr here
