Hi folks, In the process of buying a house, so everything is for sale. That includes my beloved M5 and my 2 Skodas 1988 BMW M5, number 184 of 187. 124000 miles Full BMW history Zinnobar Red with black leather interior. I bought this with the intention of keeping it in my livingroom and giving it a place on my sofa next to me, but such is life. It has not been on the road since 2001 until I bought it and as you could expect, it needed a lot of work to recommission it. It has had recently, all new; Fuel tank Fuel pump Fuel filter Air flow meter Stainless steel exhaust (by Pipe Dynamics) Induction pipes Breather pipes All service items, plugs, belts, oils etc Battery A lot of things made of rubber Other smaller things I'm sure I've forgotten In addition, it comes with a very rare BMW workshop manual for the E28. It also has an old school traction and launch control system fitted. I have no idea if it even works as I've never switched it on, but it does light up. Interesting, but irrelevant I suppose. The car will be for sale in January as there are still a couple of things still to do and will be priced at £31995. However! All work has stopped because Christmas is now in the way, so if anyone wants to jump the queue and bag it before it goes for sale nationally, then its open to realistic offers. The cost of what remains will be about £1000-1500, so nothing major. Otherwise, I'll do the work myself when everybody reopens in January and sell it at the proper price. The car was MOT'd on the 18th December, so has a whole year. Sorry for the rubbish pics but the car is rarely parked here at home as its normally stored in my friends cosy garage. To be fair to E30addict, it is a pretty sparse advert for a car right at the top end of the market - even allowing for the daft ones advertised by 4Star and Avantgarde. I'd be expecting more photos and some pretty fundamental information, like number of owners and has the timing chain been done. A lot of people will assume if it is not stated to have been done, it hasn't.
Lovely looking car though.

Bavarianretro - Yes, you are right. Its not properly for sale yet as there are one or two bits and bobs to finish to make it perfect, but I've had to put it on hold till everybody reopens in January, so this is just a wee advert to gauge interest or take an offer as it is. When its ready next month, I'll get proper photos and full details up, but for now, rubbish pics are better than no pics I suppose. I'm the 5th owner, and no mention of the chain being done in the service history, but no nasty rattles or suspicious noises either. Mobster - Yes, absolutely, but I'm listing all my other stuff here so it doesn't hurt to put the M5 up too. You never know right?  Barry - Could be yours  FOAD - Thanks! Its an 87 Estelle with 1660 x-flow on 40's, AP racing calipers on BMW discs, 5pd, semi trailing etc etc. I'll be putting an MOT on it in January, or open to offers now. I'll make a proper thread for it shortly. The other is an S100 tarmac car, which also needs a thread. Cheers mate! M5, Skodas and all the parts I have for sale are open to offers. There's no reason why it can't be advertised and sold on here.
Boyd is right about the ad, but the one thing I picked up even from that short description is that it's an enthusiast owned car, not an over-hyped collectors car aimed squarely at the investment market. I'd be quicker off to see this than one for the same price that has a 11,000 word essay about the history of the S30. Don't write an ad that loses that.

Looks lovely. Best colour as well.
I'm not much of a price watcher, but these go for strong money now. To put it into perspective, I'd be pleased with a tenth of that for my Alpine white M535i !

Please take this is the spirit in which it is intended as the most constructive possible of criticism.
Can I suggest that before you advertise it "nationally", you deal with the incongruity of "Full BMW history", and "no mention of the chain being done"?
At this price point, it needs to be pretty much absolutely perfect.
You are going to be asked to explain why it has a full dealer history, but no evidence of the timing chain having being done. Any BMW dealer - particularly an M dealer - servicing it really should have advised doing the timing chain at 100000 miles and buyers at this level are simply not going to be prepared to take the risk of the chain going bang.
There's also the question of if it was suggested, why wasn't it done? Did the owner not fancy spending the money?
To achieve the price you've set it at, you're going to have to show a comprehensive "money no object" maintenance history, not one missing the most essential £3000 you can spend on an M88.
If you hope to sell it at close to this price, in my view, you'll need to do the chain. It's not even a case of taking a bit of money off to cover the cost of having it done because its not having been done tends to show that the car hasn't been maintained in the manner you'd expect a car at the very top of the market to have been maintained. "What else hasn't been done?", is the unspoken question in the mind of the buyer.
It'd need to be done and proven to be done.

If an offer is made as it is, anything that has not yet been completed will be taken into consideration. If I sell it completed next month, then thats the price, or it can be sold now for less. Its not listed anywhere where I'd expect to sell it yet for this reason. Its a gauge only, but if it leads to a sale, the price will be adjusted. Unfortunately, Christmas has upset the schedule, so it can lie dormant, or I can test the water. Either way is good for me. Cheers!

Beautiful car but a beautiful price too, I hadn't realised these had shot up in value so much. Good luck with the sale, I'm sure you will be getting offers somewhere close soon! (If my lottery numbers come up then expect a call from me)

Hi Chap, As always I do enjoy your posts in addition to potentially coming close to buying the odd car from yourself now and again . However I am also intrigued. Is the timing chain actually a service item on these according to BMW's service schedules or is it more of a safe and preventative measure where it is recommend to be changed at certain times? I wish the owner the best of luck with the same. It looks like a peach of a car. I partially blame Chris Harris for hiking up the prices of these from what they were only a few years ago! Mind you, the E30 M3 seems to be heading in a similar direction (and to a larger extent...). |
