Up for Sale is my SD1 project car. I've owned several of these now and always keep getting another because I miss them. That's basically what happened with this one, I saw it, had to have it, bought it and got it home without seriously considering what I was going to do with it! I have several other cars, most of them needing work, so since I bought this car a month ago it's just been stood outside...I've not even sat in it.
So...it's a 1983 Rover SD1 2600SE in what I think is Oporto red. The 6 cylinder cars are really getting rare now, and the SE is one of the rarest. Lumbered with a bad reputation they're actually a really sweet engine, and are more than capable of keeping up with modern traffic.
This one has been stood, for a long time. Luckily I think it was somewhere dry, as it's not in too bad condition. Sure, there are rust bubbles here and there, but no serious corrosion. I've given them all a good prod and they're purely surface. The arches are all solid with no rust or filler, boot floor is good, strut tops at the front are sound, and trailing arms where they usually go are all spot on. I honestly don't think it needs any welding...and whilst that's not to say it won't need any bodywork, you really could just clean it up a bit and use it as is.
The car came to me with an old style logbook but no keys, they are available via Rimmer brothers or online so it shouldn't be a problem to source and certainly not to fit. Aside from the usual slightly grubby/sagging headlining the interior is lovely, again, a good clean and detail would work wonders. Brakes and suspension are unfortunately an unknown, the brakes work, and everything appears to be where it should be.
The engine is where this car needs some money spending. I guess back in 1992 (the last time it was on the road) the head seized an snapped the cambelt...valves met pistons etc. As such there is no head or cam carrier available with the car...it wasn't there when I bought it. What are the options....stick the head and cam carrier back on, use all the parts that are there and have a working rare SE, or stick a V8 in for the fun of it!
So why am I selling? As I say...I really shouldn't have bought it in the first place. I've done all sorts to SD1's, up-rated suspension/brakes, different engines, Turbo's etc and I feel like I bought it for the sake of it and because I love them. I'd rather pass it onto someone who will do something with it.
I'm not looking to make anything on it, the car and transport home adds up to exactly what I'm asking for.
The car is in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Any questions etc let me know on here.
