Overview
Here we have for sale a 1991 MK1 Golf Clipper Convertible, 1.8 litre manual. This Golf is in exceptional condition and is one of the best that we have seen and driven. Additionally, it was purchased by us from Mat Horne - aka Gavin from the TV series, Gavin & Stacey, which makes for a nice piece of owner history for this car.
The car has gone through a thorough detailing to show just how good it is. This isn't a £2-3k MK1 Golf, but one of the best, unmolested cars we think you could wish to find.
The details of this car are as follows;
History
First registered on 7th June 1991, this Golf has had just 6 owners in total with Mat owning the car since July 2007. The owner's handbooks are present along with the service book, fully stamped up to year 2000 and stamps at 2009 and 2014. There's plenty of receipts for work undertaken on the car and Mat in particular has lavished the car, spending over £5,000 with Alan Day Volkswagen of London attending to anything that the car required during his ownership.
Work completed during Mat's ownership includes a new clutch, full gear linkage and bush replacement, gearbox oil, seat tilt cable, new alternator, front wheel bearings, VW exhaust back box, new fuel tank with filler next and in November it received a full service including all fluids changed. The only outstanding items were the distributor cap, rotor arm and cam belt, which we have now taken care of.
The car now has a little over 89,000 miles on the clock, which is believed to be genuine, given the exceptional condition of this car, but cannot be guaranteed as there are some MOT certificates missing. Absent certificates are from 94-97, 02-04 and 06. All others are present.
The car is now MOT'd until 18th November 2015 and is HPI clear and retains its original registration number.
We can't stress enough in the following text and photos just how good this car is and viewing is highly recommended.
Body
Overall the bodywork is in fantastic condition. The Alpine White paint has responded well to a two-stage machine polish and carnauba wax and shines very nicely. There appears to be no rust on the body or underneath the car itself. Under the boot carpet and back seat are factory fresh and rust free. The same goes for the wheel arches which have all been cleaned to show off the white paintwork and underseal.
This Golf benefited from a new, black mohair hood just prior to Mat's purchase of the car in 2007. The car has been kept in underground storage and only covered circa 11,000 miles in this time so the roof still looks like new.
The paintwork is in excellent condition with a very fresh, clean look to it. In our minds, this goes towards substantiating the low mileage and overall condition of this car. Any brown/black you see lurking in cavities in the photos is wax, not dirt or rust!
Mechanical/Running gear
As with the bodywork, the mechanicals of this Golf appear to be in excellent condition. The engine sounds sweet with no rattles or knocks and the auto-choke works as it should. The car rides and handles well - in fact this is the best driving, most tight feeling, un-restored MK1 that we have driven - it's just another level up from previous cars that we've owned.
All of the running gear is in very good condition and items like suspension components, brake and fuel pipes appear fresh rather than old and crusty. The brake pedal is the firmest we've felt in a MK1 and pulls the car up nicely.
Finally, we freshened up the look of the car with a set of as-new G60 steel wheels and four brand new Toyo Proxy tyres. This we feel sets the car off nicely, with an OEM look to it.
Interior
The interior is in great condition for the age of the car and has no holes in the seat bolster material as you may expect.
All carpet, seats and trim are in good condition and the parcel shelf is good too, with no speaker holes. We have fitted some new floor mats in black with contrasting, grey trim and the wind deflector and black tonneau cover shown in the photos come with the car. The hood is electric/hydraulic and the system has been bled, topped-up and works well.
Everything works on the car - there is a little bleeding on the LCD clock display but the time is still legible. The car has a new Sony CD player/DAB radio which includes an AUX cable wired in to the centre console and a remote control.
Finally, there is a kill-switch/key fitted. Not only does this offer good security for the car but also prevents the battery from draining if the car is not driven for any period of time.
Summary
The last MK1 Golf convertible we had in stock was one of the best un-restored cars we had seen but this Alpine White version trumps it by being that one step up the ladder. It's not a concours car but wouldn't take much to be one. You really must see this car in the flesh to appreciate how good it is. If you're looking for one of the best, then look no further.
