Just wondered where you all buy your steel tube? Looking for a supplier local to me but there doesnt seem to be much difference in price getting it delivered to be honest.
Its only going to be used on a 4x4 for fabing up some rock sliders and bumpers/wing kits so not proper rollcage requirements.
Was looking at scaffolding, i have a heavy duty pipe bender suitable for upto 50mm so should be fine, heard you need to fill the pipe with sand to help reduce the chance of creases though?
Looking for 40-50mm tube as cheap as possible!
I'm in Gosport, Hampshire and cant really find any decent suppliers local.

Hi, I have used scaffolding tube in the past. But it is difficult to get hold of legitimately now, because they have a "life" and when time expired the scaffolding companies have to scrap them. They can't sell them in case they end up back in service with someone else. So as you only want short lengths try a scrap yards they might sell you some cut to length. Unless you "find" some, but that would be naughty. Colin

I recently bought brand new scaffolding for 85p foot off eBay seller. Cheaper than secondhand. Only problem was collection only and I'd bought 160 feet (16 x 10' lengths) - luckily I've got a large flat bed trailer. Plenty of places will sell you new scaffolding whereas they might be reluctant to sell used due to H&S rules. Budget for £1 per foot as that seem to be the going rate. Engineering pipework merchants should have various sizes of pipe in both galv and black. I bend scaffolding without sand being needed inside the pipe - there again my machine is a £1000+ Hilmor (I've got formers up to 3")not sure a Machine Mart etc Chinese made would be just as capable.

85p a foot would be fantastic haha, ive got a van so can pick it up no problem. Theres a bloke a road away from me who is a scaffolder (if thats the word) so might have a word with him if he has any out of date stuff. Ebay is worth a look though Ive got 2 galvanised washing poles in the garden i might experiment with my new bender to see how it copes.

I've given up trying to find good used scaffolding when you can get such bargains new. The lot I bought recently is Indian and excellent quality. Only thing with welding scaffolding is you need to completely clean (grind / sand) the finish off around the contact areas. The fumes that are given off are nasty and can sometimes spoil the weld as well / cause poor penetration.

Jack I used to be in the hire game, we used to rent out pipe benders, they will bend scaff pole ok (depending on capacity of machine) The only thing to watch on second hand scaff pole, if its the welded type, the welds can crack when bending. The issue being you don't know what abuse the scaff pole has had in its lifetime. Do what Composimmonite says, buy new.

Have a look at FH Brundle's website. Fair prices for small quantities and a decent range of hollow sections in the sort of sizes you might want.

Or find a small fab and weld shop and ask em to buy it in for you. You wouldn't believe how cheap it is if you buy enough. Put it this way by the time we have bought it in added abit on top for profit it's still cheaper than if you walked into a stock holders. Ten ton rate is the way forward. Also don't think because it's in a scrapyard it's cheap, a local one to me buys beams off the stock holder to the sell on
