I'm off to take a look at an Austin 1800 ute tomorrow, and having no real experience with the Austin family I was hoping someone could give me some advice on what to look for. The ute appears pretty clean, hydro bags have been replaced recently, as has the radiator and starter. Having avoided front wheel drives until recently, is there anything out of the ordinary to look out for on one of these? Are CV joints etc hard to come by if they need replacing? Only 2000 utes were ever made, would be a pretty cool car if the condition is right and if I fit inside comfortably

I don't have any experience with the 1800 but my father had a Maxi back in the day and we used to take off the tailgate and use it as a Ute.it was unstoppable even with my competition trials motorcycles in the back. have you seen? www.landcrab.net

My father had one brand new in 1974. He kept it for nearly 15 years despite having numerous other new vehicles, including a Wolsely 2200 auto version, during that time as everyday work vehicles. Great cars. When new it had a water leak and rather than take it back to supplying agent 50 miles away I crawled under the dash and found no seal sealer on bulkhead joints. Turned out to be a common BL quality problem from 1970's and supplying dealer sent me a tube of sealant through the post to smear on the joints. Never seen a Ute version but if they are as good as the saloons then a shame we never had them here in UK.

You won't have the rot probelms we get over here. Hydraulics will be PBR, so home market stuff for you. CV's are almost indestructible as long as the boots are intact and there's only one per shaft. Plenty of room inside, so as long as you're under 6'7" you should be OK. Hardest part is probably the interior, which suffers from the sunshine we don't get over here. Active 'Crab forum is HERE. Went to take a look at the ute today, unfortunately there was one big drawback I hadn't expected - I don't fit in the damn thing. Bench seat all the way back I struggled to bend my leg high enough to use the accelerator, would be aweful to drive for more then 10min or so at a time. Ah well back to the drawingboard.
