Long story short, my mothers Fiat Doblo got written off earlier this year and we opted to keep the car so got a cheque and the car, it has been stood a couple of months and I have mot'd it and I went in the post office yesterday and taxed it which I didn't think I could, now what I need to know is, it has been written off as a cat c and my mother has had no corrospondense from Swansea to say it needs a vic, I havn't changed the logbook so no withheld logbook telling me I need to get a vic first and I have been able to tax it at the post office so how am I fixed for driving it, it has tax, mot and insurance but not been vic checked, and how did I manage to tax it needing a vic as no tax reminder was sent out upon expiory of the old tax disk.
Thanks Bryan

all the cat c vic thing does is stop the electronic forms working and you wont get a new v5 if you move or change address.
sods law they are bining it next year but anything already written off still needs a vic.
same position with my 205, been through two mots and been taxed twice since, ill be fine till I need to move I think.

Yes, I think it'll be fine until a change of keeper. I don't think a change of address will do it, but I could be wrong.

I suppose time will tell, I will be putting it in for a VIC in the new year so I can sell it until then we'll see.

It appears some cars that get written off on an insurance claim as cat C and retained by their owner never have the paperwork put through by the insurance company to register it as a write off with dvla.
Had one about 4 years ago that was in a crash, was a friends Manta so i had the car at mine to estimate and for the insurance assessor to see, then for me to fix. They said it would be written off Cat C, he followed through with the insurance company and retained salvage of the car and they paid him out a very good amount. At no time did they send him any paperwork saying he had to return the V5 to the Dvla or anything about a VIC test
So once i'd fixed the car i rang the local VIC test center to book a test, only to be told the car wasn't on their list so couldn't be tested! This was about 2 months after the insurance had paid out, so plenty of time for them to do paperwork i thought. Apparently according to the VIC guys, if its not on their list its not a right off.
To be sure we sent the V5 to dvla and changed the owner and address, thinking it would either arrive clean or we'd just get a letter saying it was being with-held until passing a vic test.
It arrived clean, and has changed hands twice since then without issue with Dvla or any insurance company.

What MantaSport said. It seems to be a lottery if a car is checked (the VIC that is) once the insurance companies write it off.
When my Focus got written off I got conflicting information. Upon calling the local VIC centre (I am not sure you can do this anymore) after sending off for the check I was told that my car would not require it. I taxed and MOT'd it for 2 years after that. Other CAT C/D cars I have bought without a VIC check have also been OK to tax.
