I've had this idea for a while, may sound crazy so get ready!!
Say you start designing an engine from scratch, lets say one for a good family size hatchback at 2.0 and include the following in the design;
1. A V2 so you can theoretically have a good under-square bore:stroke thus contributing to the torque figures as I found torque is the main contributer to MPG
2. TDI so it increases the MPG
3. V2 so it kinda sounds like a Harley in some respect or V4 if its more viable as apposed to sounding like a curse word I4
4. Use a ceramic like tungsten carbide, I think, with a higher than melting temperature aluminium for the metal parts so you can run higher boost or CR if you don't turbo it
5. Direct injection
6. Twin spark
7. Electric water pump and fan
8. Say a 7 speed box with the 1st 3 gears on a narrow setting then the last 4 are wider for cruising speeds so best of both and to compensate for any acceleration los
9. Dual turbos in series so theres a little one for low revs then a bigger one when the revs get higher
10. Water injection so higher boost/CR is attainable with an additional water tank added
11. Long narrow intake manifold for torque
12. Cams with short intake duration, low lift, low lobe centre, high exhaust lift, short exhaust duration and low exhaust lobe centre
Concluding all this in a design would make for an efficient decent sounding engine I reckon.
