Hi there,
I have recently removed the dynamo and replaced it with an alternator.
Upon changing the wiring / regulator box and having it ready to test I connected the battery and with the ignition off [ ie keys hanging up on the wall ] the battery warning light was on fully , and the oil pressure warning light was on dimly .....
I then started the car and both lights go out . I have also tried another alternator and had the same result , the first alternator was a new old stock lucas and the second was a used alternator .
Has anyone came across this issue with there car when upgrading to an alternator ?
Hopefully someone out there can give me some input ! thanks in advance

Below is a diagram of how the regulator box was and how it is now wired...inside of the box is stripped and it is now just a wiring terminal... ..

If you have fitted a modern alternator you can do away with the regulator box altogether as it will serve no further purpose

Yes I understand that, there is nothing inside my box, it's been stripped out and it's just there as a terminal now. I kept it as it's more original and nicer than joining up the original wiring etc.

Hi, it's a while since I've done this but IIRC at the alternator end the big wire goes on the big term and the little wire goes on the little term. At the regulator end the big wire from the alt connects to the battery wire and the little one connects to the warning light wire. whether you do that inside the reg box or outside is up to you. The other thing you have to do is change the supply to the warning light behind the dash, with a dynamo it is fed from the batt, with the alt it should be ignition fed, which is why the light is on.
The power wire from the dynamo is rated for 20 or 25 Amps so if you have put a bigger alt on you should think about uprating the cable.

Hi Colin , thanks for the reply with that information ! I have now tried a third alternator with the wiring in the same position and all is well this time .
with the ignition off ; the lights are out with the ignition on ; the oil pressure and battery warning light are on engine running ; both out
I'm putting it down to the 2 alternators I have fitted have bad diodes/internal regulators and that was causing 12v going back up to the dash lights.
I'll try and find a multimeter with the diode testing function to confirm they are both nackered but it looks that way now.
thanks

^ It's a long time since I did the swap, I'd agree with everything Colin said except : The other thing you have to do is change the supply to the warning light behind the dash, with a dynamo it is fed from the batt, with the alt it should be ignition fed, which is why the light is on. I guess there are different ways to do things, from memory on mine I just removed the control box and connected the wires together as Colin said, no need to rewire the warning bulb. Glad you got it sorted!

Thanks, it's great to be able to have everything on full power at tick over, especially headlights and heater!
