Such a nice car. Almost bought a black one of these as my first car ages ago. Too bad it had some hidden issues or else I would probably be a die hard Toyota guy right now haha. loveitlow.wordpress.com/tag/st185/This one here is pretty cool, maybe some inspiration

New Alternator Belt and refurbished Bearing/Pulley installed, the old belt was very frayed. The job was a lot easier than I thought. Also installed a new air filter, the old one looked OK but quite a lot of wildlife in there so worth doing.

I've had both the ST185 and 182 (and a ST205), they're all excellent cars.
I loved my 182, it's not going to win any race's but I doubt you'll find a more reliable car for the money, they still look good and it's crazy how cheap they are tbh. Mine was a daily and it was sweet as a nut, I'd have no worries driving it literally anywhere.
My boot strut's went on my GT4 and I came close to turning into a murderer with shopping bags the last time it caught the back of my head in the cold... Good decision to replace it lol.
Great handling car's the GT4's and the 182's aren't bad either when lowered, it's hard finding a good ST185 now that hasn't bee beat out by muppets with go faster bits though, I'm sure in a few year's time the good one's left will hold a higher premium and rightly so.
ST205's would be my pick for a GT4, handling and power-wise they're comparable to any Japanese performance car for me but the st182/5's are my personal favourite.
Good luck with it.

I am still in love with it, its just lovely to drive and be in, even on rubbish commutes home from work. Handling wise, its pretty grippy but lift-off oversteer is really progressive, does not come on like a shock as in the Metro and MGF. I can get some torque steer when flooring it, it comes in two chunks around 3k and 6k on the revs It could do with some more sound deadening in the rear (there is basically none).

That looks like a very smart 182. Same colour as my old ST185 (GT4-RC).... Loved that car. A real raw monster. Bought it for £1k, gave it some love, re-sprayed it, and it was gorgeous again. I sold it to a mate 10 months ago when I saw my current Boxster for sale on this very forum. He only had it a matter of weeks before selling it on. I saw it for sale on ebay a couple of weeks ago for £4.5k!! Enjoy your ST182. They really are great cars, and the Gen 5's are by far the best looking Celica they made.

Lovely, it occured to me the other day I don't think I ever noticed the Gen-5 until I started looking into buying a Celica a few months ago. I have known and seen plenty of Gen6 and Gen7s but I don't recall ever seeing a Gen5, maybe they just passed under the radar with a lot of that interesting but understated '90s J stuff.

Yeah I loved mine too mate, underrated car's that get nowhere near the credit they deserve.
I agree, the 182/85 is definitely the nicest looking model, I'd say the ST205 is the best all rounder, not a fan of the Gen7's though.

gen 7's handle very well though for front driver. It has to be said I don't really like fwd on this class of car.
I owned a gen 5 J reg but had to scrap it as the sills were shot, went well enough though.

I get the feeling, the FWD keeps the values down (good for me), if it was RWD then it would be a perfect drift machine base.....and well out of reach budget wise.

Re-thinking wheels again, any other suggestions? Would be looking at 16" at the most I think, I don't want to compromise the ride too much..... Celica B&W by Robert Seymour, on Flickr

Bit of a long overdue update I've done 22k miles now since I bought it, with a 33mpg average overall, in just over a year and a half. It failed the recent MOT on the ABS light, which took a new (to me) ABS ECU and Offside Front Sensor. They were not expensive, but incredibly hard to source items which meant i was without the car for 3-weeks. On the plus side, I have finally got round to fitting some new tyres, I found the old Dunlop SP FastResponse to be niice and responsive (on turn in, to be expected) but they tramlined really badly, and also were quite harsh over bumps. I was never convinced with their wet performance. I now have a full set of Uniroyal Rainsport 3s, due to the weather I've not tested the wet performance but they certainly feel a bit more compliant, much better ride although they don't feel quite as sharp. If the wet grip is as good as the reviews say, I will be happy with the lack of feedback. I still keep thinking about changing the alloys but to be honest, I am not too fussed. Still on the to-do-list is the cambelt (for peace of mind) and the rear shocks will need replacing soon (some oil on them as noted in the MOT). The Exhaust needs fixing as it has an annoying resonance at 2000rpm, something loose somewhere, I think its just a rubber mount.

hoopsontoastWhat became of this ST182? I'm in the market for one and always liked the look of it! A quick check online suggests its not been taxed since 2020/motd since 2021 which doesn't look great. The car always looked really tidy so I hope it hasn't ended up broken up.

I don't know what happened to it, somebody took it as a doner I think as it had a blown engine (head gasket went, basically no compression on any of the cylinders). I then got a Gen-7 VVTLI as a replacement to use everyday in December 2017, and then after that an E90 330i so both the end of my 'retro rides'. I have been searching for a nice clean ST182 but to no avail, loads of Autos have come up for sale and pretty much any manual seems really poor condition or miles away. Ah, shame it became a spares car. As you say, survivors do seem to be autos or rotten manuals. I am looking to sell my 2003 MR2 and am keeping my eyes peeled for a Gen 5 Celica too.

I passed up a really nice and original GT4 ST185 at £4k back in 2014 (when I bought my ST182) as it was over budget, prices have just rocketed since. My ST182 was £1.5k IIRC and at the time, a reasonable price for a nice running example, now it seems its £5k+ for anything not shaggged, let along £10-15k for a GT4 in any kind of original condition. Just seems to be so many poorly modified examples out there from when they were worth basically nothing.
