I am getting a new car soon (cinquecento) and want a decent-ish stereo setup, I have about £150 max for the head unit and would like an AUX input on the front for my iPod etc.
Who make good head units and anyone got any recommendations?
Additionally how hard are they to fit yourself? just a matter of buying an adapter kit and plugging in or something? - sounds so stupid But I really have no idea!!!
HTW Edit : Not off topic

Alpine are probably your safest bet for a good value and quality unit.
Fitting should be easy on a Cinq as (if I recall correctly) they have an ISO standard connector which should plug straight up!

I have this CD player in the viva, Specs on Sony's websitehas an aux input, plays MP3 CD's etc etc. They are around £60 odd on ebay currently which is pretty good value. Not really an ICE connoisseur but it sounds good even just with two speakers in the viva.

It's not off-topic you fool, it's about car stereos! I've no desire for us to all be sharing pics of our installs in every other post, but a single head unit thread doesn't do any harm. Off topic would be a thread about dogs, or music...either of which would be deleted anyway.

For £150 you should be able to get a unit that natively handles iPod input. The difference is that with just an AUX input, you need to mount your iPod somewhere near the driver, and you need to be fiddling with it whilst driving which the interface is pretty rubbish for. For a proper iPod-compatible head unit, you just plug your iPod in and put it in the glovebox, then your head unit displays playlists and album names as if it's a CD changer. You can get this from Halfords for £129 all in, has a iPod adaptor with it JVC KGD421 CD Player & iPod Adaptor If you can stretch a bit, they're also doing this for £180 over the bank holiday too.... Just be careful and check stuff that says "iPod compatible"... that FLI one says it is, but then elaborates and it turns out it just has phono inputs on the back. So you end up with a headphone socket on a cable coming out from the back of your dashboard, and you've gotta change tracks on the ipod itself.

All these fancy head units are all very well, but for the true retro-head there's really only one choice of car stereo - one of these: Remember chaps - if it aint 8-track compatible, don't buy it!

It shouldn't be too difficult to mount your headunit beneath the seat (mounting it would be the difficult bit) All you need to do is extend (or replace) the audio loom which consists of Switched 12v (Ignition) Permanent 12v (battery) Negative (earth to car body) Aerial And 4x or 8x speaker connections Possibly electric aerial out and amp turn on out! Easy ;D

I've got a couple of 8 track units, but I've often wanted to make it a little updated by way of a cassette adaptor for one. 8 track mp3 anyone? speaking of mp3's in cars, was it seventynine who was using an ipod for audio with no headunit? I'd like to remember how that was done. oh, and HTW, how about a roof console to mount the headunit? I'd love to help out with a headunit choice, but i'm well out of touch with ICE nowadays. I'll recomend some speakers tho. MB quart discuss line components, 6.5" 2 ways, lovely sound, £40 BIN of ebay. now resting in the doors of the senator.

I did this set a up in the mazda, using a cheap amp off ebay some speakers and an audio lead, its realy simple (and cheap) way of getting mp3 tunes in your car. PLus I got to keep the am push button radio in place

Switched 12v (Ignition) Permanent 12v (battery) Negative (earth to car body) although, as many retro motahs don't have an ignition feed, you can wire up a switch along any positive wiring (or i guess some negs in real old cars too...) say from the cig lighter, to switch the HU on/off. remembering of course it always has a small feed going to it to store presets. yellow and red wires, usually not important which one is which (permanent/switchable feeds). had to do it in a '92 car, so it could well be needed in the datty. balls to the rest.all your realy doing is buying names.fli is on the upand coming at the moment and do some really good stuff. you get what you pay for in this area. theres a good reason FLi are so cheap.

It's not an iPod socket, it's an aux socket for anything you want to connect it to. P.S. iPods are rubbish, I have a cheap mp3 player plugged into a cassette connection and it works excellently.

I think that most of the population would disagree with you on that one! Also, the sound quality from those cassette adaptors IS rubbish! Not trying to start an argument or anything but in my opinion both those statements you made are in fact Rubbish
