Hi Guys, I have got a Covin (www.covin.co.uk), which is a good Porsche 911/930 replica.(all panels/glass swap between Covin and Porsche. (Its not a Porsche replacement as it will never handle like a Porsche, it will always be home built, but I like the fact I can cut into it without too much concern) I got this one, mostly dismantled, rolling but all the insides/guards have been removed and not re-installed....but I have a box of bits, and a correct V5 for it. It smostly VW, this one has the VW chassis, air-cooled 1500 and looks to be in OK condition. Paints a bit rough, but I think that is why it was dissembled ready for paint, engine has run in the last few days, but not working means I need to manage my funds in the correct way (that means no battery yet for it) Heres some pics, Before I got it, On my drive,
I dream like others, but I would like this as a daily driver, if I ever need it, so my plan would be: Get a 944 rear end, for wider rear wheel arms and disc brakes(bolts right in I believe) Subaru 1.8 engine, thinking an EA(easy) or the newer but ECU EJ engines(Harder with an ECU to wire) For me this replaces my Ducati, I just want a toy to tinker and I can use when I want, but I can take both my younger kids with me. I'm a novice VW person, so I might have questions at a later stage.

Ah I had a nice covin a couple years ago with alot of genuine Porsche parts. Had a tuned t2 engine in it and then a Subaru flat four.

Wanted to check the brakes. Struggled and stopped here at the drum.....big nut is bigger than anything I have.(seems I have "type 1" brakes) The "bump stop bar" looks odd....never seen photos of that type on Beetles...is it normal?

There's plenty of scope to go wild if you feel like it. You'll not annoy any purists Subaru power could be quite fun. They used to offer a Ford CVH option on these, so there's scope for some adaptability.

Never seen one of these before, pretty cool.
Could be awesome with a Suburu power plant in it!

You have got the later IRS beetle rear suspension, which is the better choice for handling and, as you say, 944 bits should bolt up. The best way to get that 36mm nut off is a big socket and a long bar that you can either stand on, or a long enough scaffold tube to lean on. They are pretty tight.

Thanks Disco, I've ordered a 36mm impact socket and I have a 1/2 inch drive Air impact tool, so hope that works. Do you know what I need off the 944 to make mine disc....the drums only seem to be 30mm wide, so suspect they are not type 3 drums?

Considering to "wrap" it to re-new the color...thinking it will be easier and can do most of it in the lounge in the warm. (or am I deluded) Painting will require lots of sanding and prep and it needs to be warmer in the garage.

Wrapping will avoid issues with the gelcoat which are often a bit tricky on old fibreglass. also gives you options on liveries?

To do the 944 brake swap I think it is best to tak ethe hubs, trailing arms and everything from an early 944 or 924 turbo.

So, not directly related to the Covin (Porschish) but needed to get the garage habitable. I ran 47amp(6mmT&E) cable to the garage in one of two 70mm conduits under the concrete footpath, I laid 8 years ago , got a consumer unit, and got an electrician to tail off the wires onto the house consumer unit. (Part P sorted) Run the Garage with a 40amp breaker and 40amp RCD in the garage consumer unit. (Should stop the mig (and other equipment)tripping the 13amp breaker, via a 20mtr extension cord) Now I can run the back gate, from this too, and not the 25mtr extension cord!! (I will close up the gaps in the panel tomorrow, before the panel goes live)

Ordered a nut big enough to remove the drum.... Remember this car is new to me, but had sat for a very long time....CV boots knackered. But there is lots of evidence of "new" parts that have been installed. I'm just playing with the car, to get it ready for a MOT, after that will do more effort to get it nice. Seems to be fresh brakes....but a broken(bent and fractured) steel brake line, and I don't have a flaring tool to fix it. (So nice to have the compressor and lights running in the garage....Love the new power board!)

So...today I wanted to remove the guards today, as i'm selling my dealer ramps on Ebay, and work under the car will be harder then... So while removing the guards, i also got some suspension shots...again it all looks in good order. suspension looks good, even with Anti Sway Bar there. Odd way to lower or raise it.... I don't know much about dubs, but it seems to have the top tube cut and now movable....haven seen that in the photos online yet. Seems to be a good job,
In the Xmas theme, If removed the guards ready to wrap. I'm going to wrap it, but not in the color I want....but it will do to practice wrapping and get me on the road.
